M3 or Evo X Need help plz advice
You can also consider C6 Corvette with Z51 package and 1LT trim (cheapest, base), which comes to about 48k. If speed is all you want, this car does everything, auto-x, road-racing, drag racing, top speed. You'll be loved by everyone except the import scene, mustang and viper fans and some snotty rich people.
If you want style, comfort, refinement, speed, pretty much little bit of everything, go with the E92 M3 with a bit of options. Complete base with cloth seats will be a long wait time and may have some trouble finding buyers when selling.
Evo X has its own strength over them though. Smaller tires and less torque means track days are cheaper. You are more likely to spend time with your car owning an Evo than the other two, since it is cheaper to start off with, and the drivetrain is suited for all kinds of roads and conditions. With the other two cars you are more likely to be sitting and waxing or pampering in your garage because of scratches & dings, depreciation from milage or whatever.
I am glad that no one brought out any of that 'with the $$ you save, you can make the Evo go faster' ricer logic. With less than 5k, you can buy yourself a rolling chassis and an LS1, stick a seat on it and go like stink. Most of people who create comparison threads like this are for personal use, not for a project.

depends on where your at in your in life. do you want to cruise and pick up some long term girls, and relax at your condo?
or do you want to pick up the on night standers? and hit the track, and hit the street on some sneaky nights.

I have been kicking this question around also. Here is how I think about it....
Drove a 135 then a M3 coupe back to back. I was blown away by the 135. Really fun car. Quick, small nimble, too bad about the diff. M3 felt more mature. Didn't have the same turbo rush kick in the pants but still goes like stink. Few things I didn't like. Torque..I mean 298 est. I know it is smaller V8, but come on. If it would have 350 or 375 then we are talking. The 8500 rpm redline is fun though. Gas mileage sux. I was hoping to short shift the car to get better mileage but with only 298 tq? And the running lean with questionable fuel pumps (fixed now?). I drove the manual. It was fun, but I had a bigger grin with the 135. Esp for the $$.
Now, the X MR. Driven the GSR and the MR. MR all the way. That tranny is sweet. You have to try one at least. It might sell you by itself. Also the navi system is pretty intuitive. I thought it was easier than the idrive in the M. It pretty much sold me and the interior is a huge upgrade from my 9. Mitsu did their homework on the X. Yeah, it is a tamer EVO, but the M3 is tamer than the first versions there. No where near close to the original. Didn't the first M3 compete in rallies? And you get better gas mileage.
The only real question is how good is your local dealership for warranty. BMW wins here in Austin. But not by much.
I am headed toward the X myself. There are a few cars I want to drive first. 09 TL, 09 CTS-V, 09 G8 GXP?
$$ and number of doors not important.... GTR, ZR1, GT3 in that order. But I need $$$ and doors like most people.

it's the money!
As we all know, you'll be lucky to get a quarter of your mod.money back when you sell your Evo.......if it ain't in the Blue Book, it aint' worth squat when you sell it.....most expensive used cars are financed and if the bank can't find the mod in the book (AC or sunroof) your prospective customer can't finance it! And in most cases, if your customer has the cash to buy your used car, he's going to buy new instead......all these big dollar, fully mod'ed EVO's for sale often don't sell for anywhere near the asking price for his reason.....if there's a chance in the world that you might end up spending M3 money on an X, you'll loose well over half the money when you sell it.....more like 3/4! Bruce
Don't know where you guys live but the ladies don't got for the Mercedes and BMW badge here like that. Most actually these days really like the rally cars...and Supra duh. If money is not an issue and you don't want to mod go with the M3..show off or not it is a nice car...though I think it is over priced and being a money issue I think the X is more of a bang for the buck really.
I really don't see a 4 cylinder car as being the only car to have. Luckily, the evo X GSR is pretty affordable and my current itch is to figure a way to buy a C6 vette LS3 with the always easy to get GM discounts and financing.
Maybe it would be more upscale to just trade off my current junk and roll in a really nice BMW, but there is an appeal to having an all weather awd turbo and a 190 mph vette at $30k and $40k, respectively.

I'm having the same dilemma myself. Evo X MR at around $41K, or base stripped E90 M3 (4-door) for ~$55K.
I'm an M3 lover (have an E36 M3), and obviously the M3 is a much more luxurious car than the Evo, with all of the performance, but somehow I think the Evo will be more fun. Especially on the track, which is where I intend to eventually use what I purchase (once my current M3 track car is worn out).

What's up with everyone and the "it has to be apples to apples!"
Come on, he set his mind on picking one of two cars, and it just so happens that the two cars are significantly different...but that doesn't necessarily mean they shouldn't be compared or argued over.
Before getting the Evo, this was honestly the choice I had to make: Evo or Prius? Totally different, but I had reasoning behind getting either one. And the reasoning is obvious, and I'm pretty sure all of you know what the reasoning is without me having to explain it to you.
But anyway, he's asking for our opinions, but why, you ask? Most likely because we own one of the two cars he's deciding from. I'm sure he has the same thread up on the bimmer forums.
And my point here is: in the end, we can't/aren't really deciding FOR him, but rather we are assisting him make a decision of his own, by subtly informing him about the pros/cons of our car.

__________________________________________________ _________
To me I liked m3 v8 (then save $$$ and twin turbo the *****) but then agian BMW aftermarket parts are 4 times the price of Evo parts, I love the comfort of the BMW but the rawness of the Evo and the zoomy ness, I like how the DCT on the M3 has all these different settings and the Bimmer looks like sex on wheel but the Evo looks mean and ready for business. I am still confused but thanks for your imput.
Id take the X and spend the extra $20,000 on the X. That would be a best of an x and would run circles around almost anything on the road. Almost.
I never been a BMW fan, seen like a bunch of prep rich kids drive them.
