will camshafts affect gas mileage and life of car?
i am new to evos and will be selling my wrx for one shortly. i have one in mind with 30000 miles. the dealership said it has turbo and exhaust mods with intake and intercooler which i am fine with. the thing i am unsure of is he has camshafts and camgears in it. will these affect my daily driveability and gas mileage as well as the life of my evo. i need this puppy for about 5 years with about 10000 to 15000 a year on it and need reliability and decent gast mileage(18-22mpg). will this be possible if i drive like a human haha? thanks
Well I will tell you this, a friend of mine bought one with mods and they killed the warrenty and sold him an extra warrenty what wouldnt cover anything at all. So be careful when your buying a modded evo from a dealership. I would suggest you buy one from a member on here because the dealer knows nothing about that car and it could bite you in the long run.
That being said I had HKS 264's and I was getting 25MPG untuned. I went and got Tomei 280's and at 80 miles an hour I was getitng 25MPG.

thats awsome to hear!!! i dont want to pay to have them removed and i am paying a mechanic to test the car or something before i buy it because like you said...the dealer thinks its mint on the outside but who knows if the dude that had it blew something or had some serious damage done to the motor before selling it. also i cant pass up the deal so if i can figure out a way to make sure it is good im buying it.!! thanks for the help
haha nice. thanks a lot dan. the evo is in deer park new york and if i end up getting the deal sent ill message you. if i go for a test drive what she i look for myself? i will tell if the tranny is screwed up but is there any way to tell if the engine is f****d. also i can tell in the pic that they are HKS cam gears which means at least he didnt put cheap crap in there. hopefully hes got some hks or other good cams in there

find out what kind of cams and the exact mod list on the car. how many miles on the car? listen for whiny noise in the transfer , thats the biggest problems besides the clutches and trannys with the evos. people will launch the hell out of these cars and stock tc's cant take alot of launches if they arent done right. same with the stock clutch. the stock clutch is garbage with the evos. lucky, (knock on wood) i am still running stock clutch with no problems. it does slip at 2step tho(if i launch it), other than that mine doesnt slip at all. also floor the car and bring it through the gears to make sure all the gears r fine and the turbo isnt shot. if you can, take of the intake off and check for shaft play in the turbo. pull the rod and all fins and make sure they r not moving.
for right now thats all i can think of, if i think of something else, ill let you no.
if you can, send me a link of the car online.
thanks

haha i will give you a link to the website it is listen on. but i dont know if i will be able to floor the car if the dude is in it with me haha. also if the turbo is shot i wont be too pissed because i want to get a forced performance green soon after anyway. i emailed the dealer and asked for a more in depth description of the mods. the car has 310000 miles.
listen to me, wheather ur upgrading or not, check the turbo, floor it. u dont want to be driving home and realize that ur turbo is blown and theres more to it. FP green evo=amazing. i am doing fp green and meth, and they r great DD turbos too.
if u r trying to buy this car, u have to do whatever u need to, to make sure theres nothing wrong with it and the car is perfect for you. floor it and make sure. evos r not cheap to fix. maintance is HUGE with these cars too. you treat her right, she will treat you right.
31000 is not to bad, as long as the car was taken care of.
get me that link and pictures.
i am more than happy to help out

rear bumper is screwed up, where the exhaust comes out. looks like they cut it. theres alot of work on the motor. intercooler piping, cams, vta bov, exhaust mani fold. the car is most likly tuned too considering theres cam and vta bov. vta bov on evos a garbage without a tune. the make the car stumble and lean out and stall at stop likes. the maf senors r very sensitive on evos. so the car is probly tuned.
honestly dude. when i was looking into buying an evo it took me 6 months to find the right one. you will no if its the right one for you. i wouldnt jump on the first car u find. imo, the car was probly beaten on and god knows what else. decent amount of work was done to the car. you dont no what the previous owner screwed around with. but its a risk you take when ur buying high performance cars. me for example, i try and buy the most stock car i can find so i can do the work myself and i no whats wrong if something happens. i bought my evo with a cat back and turbo timer. i also bought my car all the way down in ny.
i cant make a decison for you, but i can help guide you. did you get a car fax report on the car?

i am gettin the VIN monday when they open and thats why im scared of buying it because of all the work done to it. im going to take it for a ride and ask the dealer every question possible. i still need to sell my wrx first so i am not going to rush into anything. its just to slow for me haha.
my brother has a wrx, and we made it pretty quick. they have power. just be careful, dealers never know what they are talking about, they just want to sell the car to make a profit. keep looking around. there r plenty of evos out there
yea if i keep mine im getting an 18g and external wastegate setup for it and my tuner said ill get around 315whp but anymore on a subaru 2.0 isnt safe so im greedy haha. i would like 380+ just so i know i will beat most cars out there haha except for other highly modified cars like mine.

lol just helping out a fellow dsm'er
