turbo installation cost

I just bought a BBK turbo, and I've been quoted 3 different numbers on the installation cost. CBRD told me they usually charge around $270, Tuning Technology quoted me $400, and Works quoted me $640. And those price quotes are without any gaskets and any other hardware needed.

Unfortunately I can't have CBRD install because I'm across the country from them. On a side note, I'll also need some dyno tuning after the install. Works has done most of the work on my car, and I'd really like them to continue doing the work on my car. But $640 for an install? I can go to Tuning Technology and save a few hundred, but I'm not exactly excited about having a new shop tune my car and installing a turbo. What do you guys think?

640$ is quite a bit for the installation. The gaskets and hardware aren't going to cost you much.Maybe get a buddy to come over and help you out with the install and take it to your shop of choice to be tuned?

$640 is highway robbery. Have some one local help you with the install. If you dont feel comfortable helping them, pay them a few dollars to install it for you. Installing a turbo is not rocket science, I dont see why that shop would charge such an outrageous price like that.

Good luck man.

My response from Works:

Our shop rate is $99 an hour and it is a solid 6.5 hours worth of labor to do things right without cutting corners.

6.5hrs to replace the stock turbo with the same style turbo ? How about its 2.5hrs to replace the turbo and the other 4hrs jerking off with your hard earned money. Screw them bro.

Everything from your stock 9 turbo will bolt right up to the BBK. You should have no hickups on the install. Ask a friend who has an evo or a dsm to give you a hand.

If you were in NYC I'd help you for free. Just so you could see how easy it is.

Thanks for the replies fellas. If I had somebody help me with the install, would it be ok to drive an hour and a half to get it tuned? As long as I keep out of boost and keep the revs down?

You'll be OK. Turn the boost down to stock - 18-20psi - and you will be fine.

Yes you will be fine..Stay out of boost, revs does not matter as long as you are not in boost. Like stated in the above posts, find a friend or someone with basic mechanical know how and you are set. Its just a turbo. Just a few nuts and bolts.

Gaskets at the dealer are ridiculously expensive. They cheat like no other. For gaskets call Road race and ask them for it and its less than half the price u would pay at dealer. Also call road race and see what quote they give u for install. It isnt hard to change a turbo just takes time and patience. Take the dang radiator out or its going to be hell. I did my O2 install and i had radiator on and i hated that freaking heat shield. I wanted to cut it up in little pieces.

we normally charge 385... for walk in clients... basic turbo installs on evos...

for the BBK, we discount our labor as a package program...

650 is ridiculous to me...

remove the rad (15 mins)... spray the bolts with penetrating oil... unhook the coolant lines.. unhook oil return and feed and plug the feed hold on the head (10 mins).... unbolt manifold, downpipe, o2 housing bracket, intake, and o2 sensor..... (35mins).... remove turbo from car with manifold.... remove manifold from turbo... remove o2 housing... install new turbo... etc...

lol didn't mean to advertise your installation price lower than it is. I didn't know it was a discount for BBK buyers. I really wish you were located closer

I just can't justify paying a $1000 for the price of a tune and installation at Works. I'm gonna try and get a local to help me, then go to Tuning Technology for a tune.

I realize it's relatively easy. But to me, It's worth paying a professional like $400 to make sure everything is perfect.
