Why I still haven't bought an X (Dear Mitsu...)
This isn't a bash of the X. I want one pretty badly. And even though the 0% and discounts make it harder to resist, here's why I'm willing to sit on the sidelines and put money into my "old" (90K miles) 2005 GSR instead.
- I still want a 6MT. I like to cruise at 80-85 on the freeway, which is where I spend most of my time. I'd rather not be turning over 4000 rpms. But I do not want the TC-SST.
- The factory tune could be better. Where's the extra power to go with the insane handling?
- The X needs standard bluetooth. There's a hands-free LAW in California now, and wearing a headset sucks in a car as noisy as the Evo.
Anyone else shopping the X but deciding to wait?

1.Turn up the stereo to null out the engine buzz.
2. It could be. But VERY soon you will be able to flash in a map of your choice for the cost of a $170 cable. 70whp+ in 20 seconds.
3. It does need bluetooth. But again, you can add it yourself for ~300.

Most of my driving is highway based so its not just a matter of noise (turning up the radio doesn't help), its just principle - i'd be constantly revving the **** out of the engine.
The second two points are easily fixed - you can get the bluetooth from the MR and install it yourself, and get a tune. I agree, why would i need to go aftermarket for my ECU data on a 30k+ car? But alas, its not that big of a deal.
Just so you know, most 6-speed transmissions don't just add another high gear to the end. The first and final gears are usually the same from a 5 speed to 6 speed, they just tighten up the ratios of the gears in between so the car can stay in its power band when one up-shifts.

Yeah, we sure didnt get any benefits from that weight did we?
Cruise control, TON of airbags, stiffer frame, better stereo and an interior im not embarrassed about.
I agree about the 6MT...they should offer it as an option or something like that. That way people who want the more durable can get the 5-speed, and the people who like the smoother shifting (like me
) can get the 6-speed which just disappeared...

EDIT---I found it. Here it is, the gear ratios between the VIII's and IX's, MR's included. You can see that the ratios are very similar...the final drive's are very close but not the same. Also, the 6th speed is distinctly different from the 5th speed in the 5MT's.

IMO what
should do is make 6th like an OD gear, like 5th is on my '05 GSR. As people probably know, there is a lot of space between 4th and 5th on the '05, if you wind out 4th, you bog when you go to 5th... but it does help on the freeway. A 6MT that keeps the close ratios in 1-5 but has 6th as an OD gear would be ideal....
That's actually very untrue. There is a difference between the ratios of the 5 and 6-speeds. On the VIII and IX's, the 5-speeds redline at about ~160, while the 6-speeds redline at about ~172. I'm not entirely sure if they redline there, but there is a distinct difference. The OP says he cruises at 80-85 at 4000 rpms, my MR has its rpms at about 3400 at 80.
Someone posted their RPMs with a IX MR, anyone got the RPMs at 80 with a regular IX? My VIII was under 4k, I know that for sure. And if I'm not mistaken the Evo's redline fairly high but are largely drag limited. I could only hit 156 in my VIII (closed road).
Or even better, someone with a GSR wanna go 80 for a bit and note your RPMs for this guy?
The power, there's not much to say there, the car is heavier (for good reasons) and they didn't add much power. Thankfully you can get a tune, as was mentioned, for a reasonable price and add lots of power.
Bluetooth, I couldn't agree more with you, it should be standard in all cars. If it is standard on a base Sentra and a base Jeep Wrangler... Why not standard on an Evo?

whats the redline speed on an evo x mr?? and whats the redline speed in a gsr evo x???
mitsu seriously needs a 6 speed manual i prefer a 6 speed over a 5 speed. If you look at it from another point of view econo cars always have 5 speed trannys. I dont think a ferrari or a Porsche will ever have a 5 speed , they always have a 6 speed tranny and its for a reason...........top speed baby top speed.
