FWIW, I'm in NY, too, and I pay ~$90/month for full coverage, nor have I lived in home in over 25 years. WTF are you thinking? Hell, you're unsure about being to afford the mere maintenance of an Evo.

School helps with the education to get a good job to pay for the Cars
I bought My first Evo when I was 18 tuning 19 for my birthday and Christmas gift to myself since pay parent didn't want me have this car and didn't help me with getting it I had just gotten done with my first year and a half of collage and also had some established credit at 18... My First car loan at 17 years old a small $3000 car loan for my Mazda 626 in high school helped me start my credit off... Payed that off in a year then got a credit car and bought and payed off all the time really help my credit, getting a school loan and paying well on that helped my credit... I got into the good credit area when I was 18 and then thought to start looking for a Nicer car for finishing Collage... I stater looking at BMW E46 M3 since I had had a older E36 M3 that I bought cash the year before and just sold for more cash lol that just when to paying off all my debt at the time, credit card and School... That got me good credit... I then came across a friend with a Rare Evo IV that he had to sell since his Wife didn't want him having another car since he already had a R33 GTR Skyline and a Fully built and wide body track NSX... So he had it a month and had to sell it... I test drove it and fell in love with Evos... when to the bank had a few k in saving for a car... with my good credit and a decent paying Collage Job got the loan for the rest and bought my first real car the Evo IV I have had the car now for just over 2 years (this past Thanksgiving) and payed it off last month... Also after making my payments for a year and a half I sold my Truck I also had since High school (the one car my Dad did help me out with) and wanted another car.. I had Excellent Credit now and was approved for up to 30k and so I Started again looking for A BMW E46 M3 that I still wanted, but just couldn't find the one I wanted and was also looking at a few Evos I just love them and can't get over them Finally found another car the 2nd Evo I own now the 04 Car That's how I got the 2 cars I have today...
So you have an Idea of what it takes for someone like you to Work up to Since I was about your age looking for the same car... You should start now with a small credit car and maybe a Debit card too.. to start building credit... Now you also have to have a decent job too to get it... It may take you a year to get the good credit but save it this is the car you really want... Now I had a smaller loan for my IV and only payed $250 a month Paying a little extra helps your credit too and paying it off sooner... I did that... and The newer Evo I have I did a 20k loan on with a 5k down payment to show you closer to the New Evos... and pay $427 a month but pay a little more to get it paid off sooner helps credit... Now Insurance is another issue.... Being that I am under 24 years old I get Raped on my Own insurance since my parents didn't want me have one Evo let alone 2... I pay about $178 on my older 96 Evo IV and about $305 a month on the 04 Evo VIII So you being about in the same area age as me you would be looking at probably 300+ a month for insurance and depending on your interest rate and your down payment on a IX looking at 400 to even 700 a month for the car...
Know this that people Wanting a Evo by Your self being under 24 ish years old you are looking at if you have a loan on the car and pay your own insurance... 700+ a month just to have your car... So don't let the car be all your money you make being 18 years old and in school... you wont have money to do anything else lol... So many younger people buy these cars when they really cant afford them... So just be smart... don't get your self into something you may regret later on...
Good luck on what ever you do man

Evolution IVGSR is right on the money. I'm in the process of trying to afford an Evo as well. Also just by working hard and saving your money to buy an Evo will make ownership experience 5x as good knowing you worked so hard to get it.

Other than the few kids who had their cars bought by their parents, who didn't work hard for ~$35,000?

That, my friend, is nuts. $15,000/yr for a $30,000 car? I'm assuming your family has some money, and that you have good prospects after college. Otherwise, you'll be kicking yourself in a few years for not saving that money for a house and stuff... If you've got plenty of money, then nevermind

yeah man the evo is a very expensive car to have to maintain.. but once you can afford it; it will be worth it.. i mean you also have to worry if you get one also about our weak clutches going out.. synchos and such.. i mean look more into it.. i believe most of us on here have had cars that were somewhat sport before this one.. i mean i had a 350z before this.. get something like a s2000 or 350z before this car man.. it will be cheaper to insure, cheaper on keeping it together, then trade up and get a evo man.. see if you can afford a smaller sports car before you go to this one.. just my 2 cents

If I were you I'd buy something cheaper, and just save your *** off.

Get yourself a credit card with a low limit, and purchase things on it and pay it off. This will somewhat help, but before the car gives you a loan they are going to want to see a steady income as well ... Credit card credit does not give you a deep credit report.

I'm not 100% sure what it's like in the states, but if I went in with a part-time job and no credit I would be booted out the door before they gave me a loan for a car. (I think this is even more accurate since the start of a recession ... the banks are certainly tightening up.)

Buy something you can afford. There is a reason that lots of young people buy civics and Volkswagens. I had a GTi VR6 since I was 16 and dumped some money into it, but sold it for what I bought it for 3 years later. That was my downpayment for the Evo ($14,500) so my payments are fairly low.

Search for another fun car that won't depreciate as fast as others, enjoy it for a few years with cheap gas and insurance, then sell it when it's paid off and hopefully by then you will be established enough to purchase your Evo.

Do yourself a favor and don't spread yourself thin for the sake of driving a nice car. Once you hit 20 and want to travel, or buy your girlfriend nice things you will kick yourself for having a huge payment. Having something you can REALLY afford will make it that much more enjoyable.

At 21 I bought my Evo, and I've been doing double payments on it so it's almost paid off within a year. NOW the bank will certainly consider me for my first mortgage in about 6 months ... the plan worked perfectly.

Don't just "buy your dream car" now. Put some thought into what could benifit you in a few years, and what would make you happy without adding a ton of stress to your bank account.

I LOVE my Evo, but I would never suggest a 35K car to an 18 year old guy along the problems and maintenance that come with a sports car.

Sorry, ranted ... Hopefully you get something out of that.

That will get you into trouble that will stay with you while making insurance rates worse overall for everyone else. Let's be honest, you want the car because it's fast. Do what you want with your money, but I don't think this is the best car for you at this point in time. Maybe in a few years with some money saved up, better credit and a few more years of driving experience (hopefully with cars that have a bit more power to them compared to what you're used to), maybe you'll be ready.
I disagree wit this....just cuz he's 18 don't mean he's gona go out and do something stupid wit the car.... I had a srt4 when I was 16 and never got a ticket....now I'm 18 wit the evo and still no tickets

Just because you didn't do it doesn't mean that he won't. I'm not saying everybody does the same thing, but realistically speaking, is there a good chance that he's going to do something dumb? The smart money says yes. And you just never got a ticket... I'm sure you did your fair share of speeding and just flew under the radar.

First of all... good luck on trying to get the evo...it will take A LOT of hard work and determination.

Im 21...im almost done with college with a degree in accounting. I've been working at our local casino (use to do valet) but now im a 21 dealer. I was fine with my GTI and 07 R1 combination... but then the 0% released by mitsubishi pretty much sold me on my now EVO X...

my suggestion? if you cant get a degree... work at a casino and be a blackjack dealer! haha j/k.. but seriously...one of the best paying jobs for not having a degree... right now im making enough to afford my EVO X and my R1 plus insurance for both, and also a credit card, rent, and a girlfriend.

but overall... my honest suggestion is that if you really really want one...and you KNOW that you can afford everything about it, then why not?.... if it doesnt work out... remember that it wasnt meant to be.

good luck and keep us posted!

i said i was unsure about having to afford the maintenance of an evo? where'd i say that?

anyways i make enough money to afford it at least with a bunch left over for myself. i know insurance here in the city is pretty high. ive only had my license for almost 2 years anyway.

hey dude... i dont own a EVO but i own a 2008 lancer GTS. i bought it USED with only 10 000 KILOMETERS not Miles on the click (the owner sold it back to dealership to buy EVO)

with 10 k on the click the fully loaded (with leather and tint aftermarket) cost me only 25,100 canadian. im only 21. this car runs on regular 87 gas. I work at the bank and i teach guitar for 30/hour... this car still costs WAY too much. its really fun to drive, yes but compare it to lets say a corolla (my moms car) that thing went forever on regular gas. my car does an average of 11.6 km/litre

gas and insurance is killing me (esp with the spike this summer)...save up for a house like the others said.. a car is a depreciating asset. your house will still hold value 30 years from now, but not your car unless you have a vintage.

Get the college degree. It will allow you to buy the Evo, and so much more. Trust me.
