which one is the better buy...
You also have to think about resale value. The 9 is much limited compared to the 8 and down the road the 9 is what people are going to look for because its the last (Real Evo) not saying the Xs bad its just in a different market.
The 9 is gona hold its value much better. Also with the 9 each bolt on you do is going to be much more responsive then with the 8. so for you to be satisfied its going to take less money and less mods. The less mods you do to the car the better the resale and the less likely your going to scare a buyer away.
My 2 cents. ive had both a 2005MR and now a 2006 SE same color. I sold the 8 because i knew the 9 had more value to it as a whole and i knew i would be more satisfied with the 9. Its a large purchase so i would make sure your buying what you want. dont cut corners

o yea this could be helpfull for you.
Evo 8 my mods were = 02, 3 inch TBE, test pipe, Intake, both ICP, wally 255, ported manifold,23PSI
evo 9 my mods= 02, 3inch TBE, Testpipe, Intake, Wally 255, 22PSI
MY 9 would make mince meet out of my old 8

9 do not cost 25-32K btw. I got my stock IX SE /w 26K miles for $24.4K 4 months ago, at a dealer no less. Check the for sale here. Check Craigslist (how I found mine. There was a personal sale and the one I got was listed on there as a dealer sale).
I like the 9's a lot more, only because I found a SE. If I couldn't find a SE, then I probably would have went with whatever had a good price/milage ratio (8 or 9) since the interiors are almost exactly the same.
I don't plan to mod mine at all. I have way too many bills coming in and even though I only have 30K miles, I need to save up for when my clutch goes out and 60K maintenance comes up.

What? I think you're on crack.
Anyway, to the original poster:
I've owned two Evo 8's and one Evo 9. I can't tell you how much nicer the 9 is. The front bumper doesn't look like a Pontiac Sunfire anymore, torque spike is insane, and the ACD is almost bulletproof it seems. I was constantly afraid of destroying my transfer case and front differential in my 1st Evo. The 2nd Evo I had was an RS, and I think the lack of HID was the biggest reason I wanted to sell it. I loved the simplicity of the car, but for daily driving, the HID's had really grown on me and I missed them. Make no mistake, as soon as the 9 is paid off, I'm looking at getting another RS as a track-only car. I love the interior of the 9, especially the 9 SE. The seats are awesome looking. About the only think I don't like is the fake carbon fiber dash overlay. The turbo in the 9 obviously makes a difference and if you're looking at mild bolt-ons then a 9 would be the easiest and most sensible route to quick power. They respond to modifications so well. Once you start changing cams and such the 8's seem to "catch up" with the 9's because most of the cams on the market for the MIVEC head aren't much of a change from stock, which (from my understanding) the stock 9 cams are based off of the HKS 272 cams for the 8 and then an electronically controlled adjustable cam gear is added to the intake (MIVEC).
The clutches in all three are strong, despite what people on here will tell you. Currently I'm at 26,000 miles with lots of HARD driving and lots of long pulls from 50 MPH to redline in 5th gear. You just need to know how to drive in order to keep from killing your clutch. I've owned lots of AWD turbo cars and it's always the same thing: former Honda or Mustang owners beating on their Evo like it's a wrong wheel drive car and then not understanding why the clutch acts like the fuse.
Regardless of which Evo you get, you're going to love it because they are faster and more responsive than 99% of the cars on the road. Just watch out for the ricer crowd and the negative attention that the Evo will get you. Coming from the Ralliart world, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about (I'm not calling you - or any other Ralliart owner in particular - a ricer).
