which one is the better buy...

hey guys, i know, im a ralliart driver but i have finally got the oppertunity to upgrade in life and im gonna buy an evo. but im alittle torn between which version i should get, the 8 or the 9...i know the 9 has the twin scroll turbo in it, eliminting turbo lag, unlike the 8, and i know the 9 has mivec too which the 8 doesnt either, but is all that really worth 25-32k, or should i just opt out for the cheaper, slightly slower evo 8, cause ive seen evo 8s for like 18k (cheapest so far at carmax)...any advise or tips would be much appreaciated

thanks

respectively:

the 8s run on a bit lower stock boost than the 9s
the 8s front bumper is sort of ugly looking but thats my opinion and a 9 bumper conversion can fix that lol
2005-2005 8s all differ with certain things like the 03 has the IC water spray and no ACD. the 04 had no IC spray and no ACD i believe either. the 05 was fitted with the ACD and came also with an MR model.

everything the 8s lack compared to the 9 can be fixed with some minor work and such. like the bigger compressor housing and front bumper for example. i dont know about the MIVEC though...you might have to do quite a bit of work for that.

all in all dude its up to you. if u got the money...go for the IX, if u wanna save...go for the VIII

I just recently upgraded for a ralliart to an evo and i went with an 8. i paid 16.7k . From the little research i did from the 8 to the 9 is like 15 hp, with that my 8 has the IC spray and adjustable hids sun roof turbo awd (yes i know they are all turbo awd btw) so like he said its ur decision but i wasnt willing to pay 6k+ for 15 hp and i love my front bumper lol

The VIII turbo is twin scroll as well, all mitsu turbo's are. The real advantage to the 9 turbo is power potential. Buy an VIII you will not be disappointed, and you will save yourself a bunch of money. The fastest evo's are all VIII's btw.

where did you hear the turbo difference?

that's false

bottom line a ix makes the same power with basic bolt ons as a cammed viii

coming from a ralliart it's safe to say you'll be fine with an viii

please search more as it's obvious your knowledge is limited in terms of evo's

You don't need to upgrade the engine internals or the turbo to run higher boost. A manual boost controller will allow you to up the boost pressure very cheaply. A retune is a MUST if you do this though so find a good shop on here for that. You will unlock a lot of power for very little money with this and the exhaust you mentioned. If you have E85 in your area I'd look into getting a tune for that. The hp gains are massive even on the stock turbo.

After you read that thread then read:

I'd recommend the IX as well. Better looks on the outside and much better on the inside. But that's just my opinion. The money you saving getting a VIII could buy a lot of hp.
