Accidently goin into reverse...

so ever since ive drivin a manual..9 months my worst fear would be accidentally going into reverse while downshifting from 5-4. my question is and its totally a noob question...can it go into reverse while the car is in motion? ive notice that by playing around with the shifter, while the car is park, that it wont allow me to go into reverse unless i go to 1st..first. i dont know about the other previous evos but the X seems to prevent that. i could be wrong..

Its impossible to go into reverse unless your car is not in motion.

You could check your manual, it may say something about it.

The older MR 6 spd has a little ring you have to pull to get into reverse, so I don't have to worry about it.

It's not possible to do that without letting the shifter fall into neutral (the center position between third and fourth) first. Reverse is locked out. Try doing it when the car is off, it still won't work from fifth.

won't go into reverse, it's like trying to shift into 1st when you're moving.

im dont think its impossible actually... i think at the right rpm and a little force it can go into reverse... however.... its not going to happen just downshifting...

It won't let you shift from 5th to 4th without going to neutral. But even if there wasn't a prevention mechanism I don't think you could shift to reverse while moving (it would simply grind gears). Even when going 1 mph in a parking lot it will grind gears when you put it in reverse without coming to a full stop first.

DeeezNuuuts83 is correct. The design of the reverse lockout ensures that you have to return to a full neutral position before shifting to reverse from 5th.

you won't be able to put it in reverse at that kind of speed unless you force the hell out of your shifter and grind it all the way through and pretty much break it. MasterAK is right because even when you're moving really slow like 1mph rolling and putting it in reverse, it grinds a bit so when you're going faster then that it's not possible

Wouldn't work.. if it did it would lock the wheels and I expect kill numerous parts all in one go.. the gears are spinning the wrong way so no way it's going to slot in

It happened to me 2nd day of driving my X (insert flame here) This is the 1st manual i ever drove and tried downshifting 5 to 4th and it did happen, i slowly let the clutch go and wow it made a horrible noise however i didnt completely let the clutch go... i put it back in and then downshifted.... holy crap i was scared i damaged something.... but everything was fine, so it can happen, because it happened to me.... made alot of ugly grinding sounds
