Question Just got myself a used 05 Evo 8...SCARY sound while shifting!!! Please help

Hey peeps,

This is my first post, so please bare with me...I just baught an 05 Evo 8 two days ago!!!

I took it for a drive and noticed a very loud grinding noise while I shift or down shift...

I also noticed that the sound goes away when I give it a little bit of gas just before I release the clutch...whats up with that?!?!?!?!

I have no idea what type of clutch the car has, but i'm sure that its an aftermarket one...

There is also a VERY LOUD whinning noise while driving the car...my buddy told me its either my diff or transfer case giving up on me?!?!

I still haven't done any of the necessary maintenance such as engine/diff/tc oil change, spark plugs, timing belt, and so on...

I have read in the FAQ's that if you extend the clutch peddal range that the sound might go away...BUT I WANT TO LOWER IT, CAUSE ITS REALLY HIGHT FOR ME....CAN'T DRIVE IT!!!??!!

Any help...

p.s so sorry for this long and boring post....I thank you in advance if you actually read it...hahah

cheers guys

Why would you buy a car with these problems?! The grinding is more than likely your syncros and the whine is prolly your tcase......
I hope you where smart enough to get a warranty when you bought the car.....you can always try adjusting the clutch pedal. here's the how to https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...djustment.html

Listen to your buddy. Take it back to the dealer you bought it from.

Guys,

I have no regrets here....I barely found an evo here in Jordan (the not so cool middle east) and its in really good shape....only 38, 000 KM on it....its a japanese spec by the way...

I need to know what repairs I should do...should I go back to stock clutch, and get myself a new diff/transfer case???

I don't have that much money on me, but I seriously LOVE the evo, and would sell my liver if I have to get the money for repairs...

The grinding and whining is your transfer case. They whine once they start to go bad. And when the grinding starts happening you have a week or two left before it locks up on you and leaves you stranded. Ask me how i know =(

The whine may not be the diff/Tcase but it might just be an aftermarket fuel pump. My Walbro is really loud..all the time!

Damn, I'm sorry.

Good news, you'll have a brand new tcase.

Find someone who has worked on one before, and have him take a look at it. It is hard to diagnose over the internet. Even if it is your Tcase, it is better to confirm it before you drop a bunch of cash. Plus you will want someone who knows how to do the install, so you are going to have to find someone who has worked on one before anyways.

synchros are mechanisms/gears in your tranny that help the gears rev match when you change gears i think. it eliminated the need to double clutch all the time when shifting basically like in the ollldddddd **** cars lol. i dunno someone with more knowledge may correct me if i am wrong

see if u can take a video of all this man cuz the whining noise can be tcase, ur diffs, fuel pump. and u say u hear a grinding noise when u let go of the clutch when u shift? how does the car feel when this happens? sounds like really bad synchros for it to be like that

Hey NYC....thanks for the feedback, I'm going to my mechanic this weekend and will let you guys know whats up in a few days....

Yeah the car is whinning really really really loud from inside....the same sound comes out when I let go of the clutch, but its more like grinding....I have no idea how the car feels when this happens, as I haven't been in any other evo to compare...

Thanks for the info on the syncros, at least now I can point my mechanic to check what I suspect might be the problem....

Cheers
