should I buy this evo?
exactly. i plan on atleast doing the normal bolt ons, turbo back exhaust setup, etc...
Then eventually swap the turbo and get a bigger intercool/piping and a built motor.
Anyways, can the stock clutch handle simple bolt ons? intake, exhaust? Is it worth it to get it tuned after adding just an intake and exhaust?
how much SHOULD labor cost when putting in a new clutch?
thanks
EDIT: Well I read the sticky on the MODS thread for the evo. It does say that a tune would be best. But I mean, how much do they charge for a tune for just a intake/exhaust? $200?

Yes. By increasing the air flow though the engine puts you in a bad part of the stock maps. To take advantage of these parts you need a tune.
book time on a clutch for those cars is 10.4 hours, most shops will round it up to 10.5.
they are a pain in the ***. dealers charge anywhere from 85/hour maybe more (85 is our shop rate). on a job that big, see if you can talk them down to about 50/hour (some will, some won't be ready for them to tell you no). also, take the car to either mitsubishi (flame on if you will) or another reputable shop that has experience with evo's, else u might end up with further problems.
EDIT: when u get to the point of having to do the clutch, u may as well spend the couple hundred dollars more and get a better clutch/flywheel since its all being taken apart anyways.

thanks for the responses guy!
jve153: Does the lightened flywheel make a rattling noise? I read somewhere that a guy was selling his car, and he said he had a rattling noise. However, he said that is "common" when you install a lightened flywheel.

I don't agree with this statement, I have 64k miles on my evo and still on the stock clutch. If you abuse the car of course the clutch won't last.
Evo doesn't have weak clutch, it hold up 360whp/tq fine, how can you say this is weak? I plan to drive on the same clutch over 100k miles.
Make sure the car has never been modified even tho it looks stock but the owner could have put all the stock parts back, and listen carefully for any drive train noise, a lot of evo owners ABUSE their drive train, make sure you don't buy a problem home. Look for sign of any fluid leak and make sure you bring a OBDII scanner to make sure there is no CEL even if you don't see CEL on the dash.

If the car is in excellent shape i think its worth overpaying a little even if you dont get him down a single dollar. You'll end up paying for it in the end one way or another if you pick up a car that's been abused. Don't be afraid of buying a car thats been raced, the person who says they've never raced their car is the one that abuses it more than the average.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Well the guy lowered the price to $18,500.
I am happy about the price, but still not sure if I want to purchase it or not. Before researching about the evo, I didn't know they had so many problems.
I just got done reading a thread about 5th gear grinding. Geeeezzzzzzz.
Are STIs better from the factory!? my gosh

more like a toyota. but still, your statement really isn't saying much. it's more like agreeing that evos COME with problems. Not problems after you mod it, but problems from the factory! Way to go mitsubishi
your first and best mod should be saving up for a quartermaster twindisc push type clutch
, dont settle for that single disc pull crap or you'll be doing alot of clutch jobs IF you race.
also, the evo is a sports car, not a family commuter with lots of HP thats reliable, although with proper maintenance you can make it last a long time and still have some road track or rally fun... sports cars that are driven hard WILL have problems. its not IF but WHEN.

personally the only problems I see is that the clutch wears out quickly (again, depends on driver) and maintainance fees can get quite expensive (well at least where I live).
based on your statements, you don't have that love-at-first-sight feeling with the evo. I really do hope you get the evo but if you feel reluctant don't get it. good luck, just make sure you dont regret whatever decision u make.
