Choices: Used stock M3 or Modded Evo X GSR?
Choices: Used stock M3 or Modded Evo X GSR?
I know this is an unlikely comparo but bear in mind that I do not care much about the looks of a car nor do I care for the prestige. What I care most about is performance and fun factor. I would track the car about 10 times a year and I would track the same car that I drive everyday. No separate set of track wheels. Has anyone else considered these 2 cars? Any thoughts?
Stock used 08 M3 coupe or sedan = $40k - $44k
2010 Evo X GSR base with mods = $28k + $9k in mods = $37k
Kw3 coilovers, Tune, TBE, UICP, Filter, Swaybars, 10.5 in wide RPF1 wheels, 275/35/18 Dunlop Star Specs, brak pads, fluid, SS lines, Labor for all installs.

M3 pros:
- Build quality
- More comfortable daily driver
- Better Top end power?
- Don't have to mod
- Resell value
M3 cons:
- Price
- Less traction than Evo
- Not as good a track car?
- Expensive maintenance after warranty
- People at work will think I'm showing off. Will drive a more expensive car than my boss
- Will be buying a used car (unless I can order a new stripped down E90 with no options for a good price)
- More likely to spin and perhaps hit a wall at track
Evo pros:
- AWD = better in rain, no churping tires around town when I want to drive hard
- Can get on the gas earlier in turns at the track
- Putting on 10.5 in wide wheels will give me crazy traction at the track
- Seats are better for the track
- Safer at track with AWD
Evo cons:
- Build quality?
- Only a 5 sp
- Weaker top end? (I care more about low end power btw)
- Cheap interior
- Resell value
For the Evo, if you get a decent set of coilovers (KWs are nice) I dont' think you will need swaybars. The X is pretty stiff. Ask a reputable suspension shop though what they advise.
Also, the resale value of the X is debateable. Right now they are cheaper new than used in many areas! And since the 09s were not brought to the US, there will be extra demand for the used 08s, meaning values will be elevated to match the demand.

I know a lot of people will say "Drive both and then decide." Unfortunately I cannot drive a modded Evo. Even if I could, I wouldn't be able to test drive it on a track. I have already test driven both on the streets with a salesman riding shotgun. Of course the M3 would win hands down but the track experience is very important to me.
If you're gonna track it, then evo without a doubt. If not, and it's your dd, I'd say the M3. However, if you never owned a geman car, the maintance is quite a bit more expensive than on most domestic and non-luxo japanese cars.
Although the work is more expensive for Bimmers, you'd find yourself visiting the service dept. less often than with the Evo... Then again, with all the mods going in to the Evo, voiding the warranty, you'd be out of pocket for all work.... So either way, it would be expensive to maintain.
Anyway, M3 is a great car, has great build quality, monster motor, and a solid history. it would be a better DD IMO... The Evo would give you a woody on the track, and I for one, feel more exclusive owning the X...

I assume it's the new M3. I like how you point out the pros and cons, especially that "driving better cars than your boss part" It really depends on what kind of job you have, and yes it is one of the many many factors that can affect you at your work place. If you are in your 30s with a nice job, single and with money, get the m3. I think bmw really does show exquisite craftmanship and taste. Again, speaking of personal experience, driving a better car than the boss can be a taboo.
Again, german engineered cars can be a ***** to maintain. They cost more than double on oil changes and filters (oil changes are usually covered, but that is only if you have to pay) the services at the dealership (usually the most trustworthy imo) can cost a lot of money. Check out edmunds long term test, it shows how much money they spend.

^^^idk about that one, here in cali, there's way more X than the newer model M3, muddypaws, you got me thinking about a m3 now, if the used price is correct, haven't researched it yet though, but its extremely appealing at that price
Youll def catch some milfs in the butt, with the m3.
