Arrow Just bought a 04 RS for 8.5K

So here is the deal. Found an 04 RS on craigslist for 8500.00. I know it has a few problems but I am pretty sure I can get it running great with a tune up. The seller doesn't seem like he is completely on the up and up on being honest with me but I do a pretty good inspection on it.

The story goes, its his shop car and it was broke into, they stole the battery cd player, amp and rim/tires. (they cut the battery leads to the battery) He did a pretty halfassed job on the wires. I re-did them. He ended up putting brand new rims and tires on it.

Basically find out on my way home the alternator is not working. Also the wheel bearing is starting to groan. No big deal considering the deal I got.

I probed the four wires on the alternator with the car running.
(pin 1, no voltage)
(pin 2, battery voltage ~12.8)
(pin 3, ~11.5)
(pin 4, ~11.5)

Also probed right off the positive output of the alternator. Nothing.
With out any kind of manual, I am guessing the alternator is getting signal, but just not working. He probably fired it when he was hooking the wiring up. I am not totally convinced it's correct now. Can some one give me a picture of the 04 RS battery connections?

I pulled the alternator out tonight to have it tested tomorrow morning.

He has not done any scheduled maintenance on it. So I have a timing belt replacement coming up very soon as well as fluids, plugs, wires, ect.

So at the end of the day the repair list is
60K scheduled maintenance
wheel bearing
new passenger tail light (going to EVO7 style anyway)
CD player (going to install my own anyway)
Alternator
Broken seat back(already fixed)

The good is
Brand new rims and tires
AEM intake
B&M Short shift kit
Fastest Car I have ever owned

So if someone could help me on the battery terminals that would be great.

So did I get a decent deal? Either way I have had a blast driving it so far Thanks

Unbelievable deal (assuming no big $ problems are hiding)! He probably didn't want to deal with the issues and dumped it for cheap.

Best of luck with the repairs!

like everybody said so far, it's a great deal as long as there are no serious issues like trany, t-case, or engine related, everything else can be replaced, repaired for cheap.
Make sure you get a tune for it when everything else is sorted (may I recommend the best of the best? Mellon FTW!)
I have a red IX RS, one of the fastest cars I've ever owned also good luck, and enjoy it.

Seems pretty good. You might have to put a little work in but you still saved a bunch of cash.

Is the hood popped in the picture, or is the alignment that far off?

you kidding me? even if he needs a tranny and tcase, its still a decent deal. 8500? thats like used civic price.

id make that a street/track car.

shep trans
shep tcase
built motor with like 500+ whp
some racing seats, harnesses
suspension
wheels/tires

and still cost less than an average 9 for sale

id make that a street/track car.

shep trans 895(rebuild)
shep tcase 2000(est)
built Short Block motor with like 500+ whp( assume bruchur 2.0 3050)
some racing seats, harnesses (OEM parts good)
suspension 1500(avg)
wheels/tires (free already on car)

and still cost less than an average 9 for sale

what about twin clutch 1700
Fully built head 1625
ported intake 300
ported T/B 65mm 300
Turbo kit assume 35r 4000
TBE 600
apr headstuds 90
Camshafts 600
new headgasket 50
timing belt 150
springs and retainers 300
new plugs 30
tune 350 ONLY THE BEST MELLON TUNING
total for parts this does not include labor
17540
now you have all that plus the price of the car 26040 hmmm thats a mean price considering some of use start at 17500-28000 plus the price of those parts and cant forget labor in both cases. I say better start looking for some used parts and cut cost thats alot for a fully built evo LOL
