Help.. Getting into an Evo.

Hey guys, whats up? I'm new to these forums and am looking to get into an Evo!
I live in NY (Farmingdale). I'm kind of undecided where I should get one from. Am I best looking at a dealer or a private owner?
This shop over by me has a 2003 Evo VIII with 25,000 miles. This thing is clean. But.. It has no motor because they sold the motor that was in it. So they said they would build me a fresh motor for around $16k. Seems like a good deal, but i dont want to have any problems in the future. This shop builds some of the fastest Evo's on Long Island and I think i would trust them.

So what do you guys think? Go to the dealer and get a warranty or get a freshly built Evo?
Thanks

You're going to be hard pressed to find a warranty on anything but the newest 2006 or so Evos, right? Unless you meant a brand new one?

Personally, I'd get some more details about how they planned to rebuild the motor. Get specifics on "new" or "oh, lol, gentle used 4G63", or what *EXACTLY* they mean by that.

Also, what shop is it? If you come back and say "lol Ivey Tuning", that means a lot more than "lol some guy in his back yard with a 4g63 sitting in the lawn".

lancershop.com advertises a crate engine Mitsubishi OEM EVO Crate Engine : 5 Speed Our price: $5998.95.

Or for $16,830.00 you can get: Tomei Complete Engine: Derive Phase 1 from bulletproofautomotive.com.

Warranty is worthless.

$16k for the motor or the whole car with a different motor? It certainly sounds worth getting more details on.

1st buy a evo with a carfax report from a reputable source. Unless you know exactly what you want, don't get a shell and build from there. That is a sure way to spend a fortune. Ebay, Craigslist, and this forum all have cars for sale.
Consider a 2006 with lower miles. You will get a fresher car than the shell you are looking at for less money.
