Hey everyone, just drove my new '06 Evo MR home from San Fran yesterday (what a drive :-/ ).
I've always wanted an Evo, just never took the plunge until this week. I decided it was time to get one, as I'd pretty much maxed out the performance of my new '09 Mazdaspeed 3, so the search began. Dealers in my area wanted over book on the examples they had, and they weren't special in anyway, so I looked out of state. I found a few in Cali that I liked, and the one I settled on was a red MR rolling on stock Evo 8 wheels. It had 29k on the clock, and the pictures and carfax looked good, so I flew down thursday afternoon, and drove it straight home.
And what a drive... hehe, got my first speeding ticket in 4 years, ran over my first animal (skunk on 199), and first blowout on the freeway (pulled over to ****, hit a nail). And for some reason, my estimated 12 hour drive took me 20 hours... oh well.
So about the car, the dealer assured me it was good, and I called him one last time before I got on the plane to confirm. I got there and initial reactions were good. It looked great, only had a few minor problems with the exterior, one being the obvious reasons an Evo 9 was rolling on Evo 8 Enkeis. The PO had aftermarket wheels on it, and it looked like they may have been too big, or the wrong offset, as the passenger front fender liner had been torn from its two of its mount screws. Also the driver side headlight has some scuffs on it. The interior is about 90%. The center console around the shifter is missing its screws or something, but still not really worried about that.
I was happy though. It started, ran, and idled great, and it shifts great too. As an added plus, the clutch was good. Most of the ones I've test driven have very worn clutches. So all in all, I got a good deal, and the condition of the car reflects it (4k under book). And I had an odd first experience with it lol.
The one thing that has me really curious though, is the headlights. Half way through my drive I tried to turn on my high beams, and they wouldn't work. I figured it would be something easy to figure out, and boy was I right. When I looked, I found that there were no bulbs. And this brings me to my first n00b question. Not only were the high beams missing, but so were the bulbs on the inboard of the high beams. The HID's were there, and they worked fine, but the other 2 bulbs in the housing are missing. I checked a local auto parts store for which bulbs might be in there, but they only list the HID's and the high beams. Nothing else. They list no DRL's, and the blinkers are on the outside. Anyone? Thanks!

driving like that, i dont think your car is gonna last u much, lol
Sorry to hear about the ticket. Thats funny that we did almost the same thing except I drove mine back from LA to Seattle. It is crazy how much cheaper evo's are in CA than in WA, there is like a 5k difference at least.
i wouldn't say its such a good deal...for $25k, i've seen some mint looking evo mr's. car sounds like its been tampered with and put back to stock. wheels, lights, shifter, etc. maybe just cosmetic stuff, but not sure if i would've taken her home. post some pics though...

Welcome to the club! I traded a 2006 GTO six speed for my EVO, always liked the idea of a quick-responsive AWD car with a lot of potential. I have never looked back. This car handles so well, I have a lot to learn to reach its' full potential. It is nice being able to drive around in the snow too.
