I run 272's with stock valvetrain. I however did upgrade to JAM lifters to cure the ticking that the HKS came with. I bled my lifters twice and tried other stock lifters and still had the tick. The JAM lifters cured this and the car runs great with the 272s. Just food for thought, they are cheap and easy to do while doing cams.

They only change the duration not the lift so it doesnt put any more strain on the valvetrain.

I run hks 280's on stock head . everything is A - OK!
Well, I think if the degree is more aggressive, the valves will have to go down faster and thus upgraded valvesprings are required? (I'm not sure, just throwing it out there)

there is some true and false info on this thread so to clear up... regarding the HKS 272 mivec cams.

1) The Duration is what is the most significant change on these 272 cams
2) The Lift is MILD, but it IS higher than stock. It is 10.8mm INT and 10.2 EXH (stock is 10.0 and 9.8 -ish)
3) Stock springs/retainers are fine up to 8000rpm (this goes for both the 272 and the 280(Evo8 only) versions since both have the same LIFT.
4) The HKS 272 will help spool faster than stock cams. These are awesome low/mid range cams. They do taper off power at the top as a trade off but better than stock.

My friend ran gsc 2 cams on stock springs with a 6262 turbo at 32 psi and have some bad valve float..In my my opinion anytime you go bigger then hks 272's springs and retainers are a must!!!

well let me add my 0.02 considering im a couple steps ahead of where u are...i personally have 272 hks i&e on my 03 evo 8. im currently running brian crower springs & retainers, were they necessary considering my engine is built, NO, but if you wanna push higher rpms eventually those will help. ive ran my car numerous times to 8k no problem...but how street driveable do you want your car?? hks have a great lope at idle, the power is there through the midrange and mine doesnt die off in top end. Now if your all about numbers go kelfords or gsc's like stated before but sacrifice some low end for a bit better topend. I only made 385 awhp but in 107* dyno room at the time numbers gonna suffer, but in a cold night **** keeps pulling no doubt.
so in the end of reading it, you dont need springs and retainers unless you wanna rev high.

Thanks for you info, but i hear than if i want o make 650whp i need a 280 cams like GSC or Kelfords, is ok for me to drive with son loop on the street, i believe than i need more low end power than high end, cause the stroker I’m right? When i had my 2.0l i use to drive 8k also.

....no you don't need 280's to make 650whp....although cam selection is a very important part of making power. It seems that you are miss guided in your approach to power. You could make 650whp on a 272.....there is allot more to cams then the duration

Hi guys,
ive put in a GSC S2 on my Evo 5 engine recently and i only change a new set of oem evo 8 springs with my current old springs.
So my concern is, will the Mit Oem valvesprings able to handle 7500rpm?

James - Any reason you keep asking questions about your GSC cams ? Why not just contact Greg or read the GSC website ?

Directly from GSC's website for Evo 5 S2 cams : "The S2 Cams are suggest to run on our upgraded Beehive valve spring replacement or can be run at the stock revlimit and factory boost on the stock spring. "

If you are WORRIED then follow GSC's recommendation. Frankly, I don't understand why you did not change the springs in the first place, but I guess you weren't concern then....
