are valve springs needed with hks 272 cams?
Ok. So I've been checking prices and stats on evo 8 cams for the past 2 hours as well as reading the forums and am coming to the conclusion that hks 280's are the closest cam the will provide the most "streetable", daily drive feeling with the least lope and lift correct?
I'm no expert, but also not a novice when it comes to building an evo, but I think having aftermarket valve springs would be worth the investment right? I mean most people say hks 280's are comfortable, but should not be ran higher than 8k rpm band right? What about those of us who like to occassionaly to weekend launches? If I kept oem valve springs and let on the 2 step/rev limiter (that puts out well over 8k) would that potentially cause a serious problem?
I'm going to play it safe and go with hks 280 and supertech valve springs/retainers. I am building a big hp evo, but it's also my daily driver so I think I'll let the kelfords to the big track evo's for now.
Thanks for all the info though. It definitealy puts my mind at ease with this whole "cam selection" process.

James - Any reason you keep asking questions about your GSC cams ? Why not just contact Greg or read the GSC website ?
Directly from GSC's website for Evo 5 S2 cams : "The S2 Cams are suggest to run on our upgraded Beehive valve spring replacement or can be run at the stock revlimit and factory boost on the stock spring. "
If you are WORRIED then follow GSC's recommendation. Frankly, I don't understand why you did not change the springs in the first place, but I guess you weren't concern then....

first of all this is an open and a learning forum to most forumers and the reason i ask the same question is =
1) IVE NOT GET THE ANSWER YET
2) I bought a GSC beehive valvesprings but only to realize that it must match with the retainers as well, so i bought a new evo 8 oem springs.
3) I still didnt get an actual answer for the stock rev limit as im revving at 7,500rpm now
4) Wont it be better to try and get an answer in a forum which i think there are many experience peoples around instead of go direct to Greg whenever i need some minor info.
Btw, thanks for your advise and you can ask the moderator to delete my posting if you think ive no right to post in here...
well to answer ^^ guys question:
to# 2) if your buying upgraded springs they usually come with retainers, you should ask the manufacturer of the parts your interested in with any questions because they know there parts.
to# 3) 7500 rpms is a bit high but safe on stock valvetrain just dont do it everyday
to# 4) most of the people on here can answer your questions or give u good general advice, but there are idiots on here.
so long story short op do u need them no should u buy them yes. buy them for insurance, but also if you go down the drain with spendin a lot of money to make more hp then at least the cams wont hold u back

if your going to running a fp red on an ix then you would suggest you go with cams bigger then hks. I would suggest kelford 272's, cossi m2's, or gsc s2's to really wake that turbo up. If i would have kept my hks 272's in the car i would have made about 30 less hp. I would suggest you red up on cams before committing to hks's.
think of it this way op, using hks cams with valve springs and retainers is like fu*kin a bi*ch with a rubber, then throwing some spermicide on for added protection, is it needed no, but will it keep u from havin an issue, more then likely. i think personally u should ditch the hks for somethin like cossie m2 kelford 272 or gsc s2....ull thank me later for the better topend...haha
