Need evo owners opinion, what should I do?

Hello everyone,

So I've been on the evo search for a while now and I've come across some ok evo's until today. I found an evo locally and I'm really interested. It's an 03 Evo VIII with 12k miles and its being sold for 19k. The owner is a 2nd owner of the car and she said she just put in a new clutch. A part of me wants to jump at the offer because it seems like a screaming good deal, but a part of me wants to pass on it because the car has been autox'd before. I'm worried that if she burnt out the clutch in just 12k miles what else is about to break on it. All opinions are welcome, my stepdad is telling me to look at it with caution, I just don't want to get myself into something I regret because I didnt take my time.

Thanks again
Eli

What else has been done mod wise? 12k of flogging isn't all that bad if it's done at close to stock power levels with a good tune. Also, toasting a stock clutch isn't an uncommon thing. I would check it out and make a decision based on more info.

Yea I'll find out tomorrow what she has done to the car besides the new clutch. I think that the 19k firm she's asking for is a bit too much considering the KBB values for an excellent evo 8 03 are only 17k but I doubt she will budge. Hmmm what to do what to do

no point in getting a evo 9. this evo has low miles. I would take it and get it inspected by a shop and a compression test on motor for sure.

Take your time, but don't settle. I usually make an objective pro's and con's list of the cars and use it to make a good decision...

this is really good advice, Pay the $50 for an inspection. If its all tip top offer her $17000 I sold my VIII with just under 41,000 miles for $13000. The worst thing i would say about the older evos is no cruise control lol. Just cause it was auto crossed doesnt mean much at all. Again get it inspected first, have her pull you a Carfax as well. She will never get $19k for it, sorry!

I know it may not be what you want to hear, but you might consider looking for someone who used it for a daily driver/commuter. Depending where on craigslist, you can find completely unmodded, well maintained, adult owned older evo's for 16ish. I'm not saying to skip on the opportunity, but I am leery about buying something that everybody watched Paul Walker launch the heck out of 5 years ago, and thinks they can do it because they watched it on a movie. Personally, I would be worried about the transmission and/or transfer cases. Just my 2 cents. -stuie

Just my two centz...I would pass, unless you can knock it down to around 16k or 15k. Low milies is low milies, but I wouldn't pay close to 20k for 03 year, which already 7 yrs old car. Keep that mind tho, noone will pay what kbb value these days.

Don't just settle. You can find a better deal. If you're having second thoughts now before you even buy it you're gonna regret it later if you do actually buy it.

Save your $50 and continue the search. The supposed low 12k miles is not your average low 12k miles. It has been tracked/more than likely abused. Most people think that finding an Evo that has been unmodified/unabused is like finding a needle in a hay stack. They are all wrong. Even if the price is lowered to $17k, you are still going to be thinking about what kind of life that car really had. The joy is in the hunt. From a fellow New Mexico native to another, pass and get yourself something that you will not second guess yourself on later. Good luck.

If it was something you really wanted to do then you'd ask her to drive it to the shop and you pick up the tab. If it isn't a performance shop that is familiar with Evos then it might not even be worthwhile. I think they were assuming that you know of a competent shop nearby.

In my honest opinion, I would not worry about it. Evos can handle, hell that's what their made for. That's a great deal and I think you should jump on it, or at least test drive it.
