for drag racing the VIII.

Since over certain power level the mivec wont give you any advantage. So the IX is out.
Not worth the extra money for real high power level + gutting the car.

The X is all together out from drag racing in high level. Cost too much since a new car, also the AYC is not a big fan from the begin with since evo IV of the hard launch and high TQ.
Also the X GSR is heavy compare to the VIII RS
For you the best would be the VIII RS.

Rob

But the OP seems to prefer the IX anyway, plus it doesn't hurt to get one instead of an VIII. He also wanted a lower mileage Evo, and going with the older VIIIs rather than a IX has a higher likelihood of his seach producing Evos with much higher mileage.

Rob's still got a point if you're trying to save some cash. A 2005 is almost the same as the 06. You can get some sick deals out there if you look hard

Yea, i do realize that. If i cant find an ix then i will probably most likely go with an 05 viii.

I bought a brand new Evo IX in February of 2006, and later ended up trading up for a good deal on a brand new Evo IX SE in February of 2007. My IX SE has ~28,500 miles to date, and has been very reliable. The only issue I had was that the car felt out of alignment, which I got taken care of under warranty, as I had noticed the issue within the first few months and was rather familiar with how the car "should" drive, as I had also owned a IX directly before my IX SE. As a daily driver, the car has been perfectly fine with no real complaints. My car is still bone stock (as I was between jobs for a while and didn't really have the budget for toys for the car and eventually got over it), and I've achieved higher than 27 mpg (tank average) on one occasion, though it hasn't been uncommon for me to exceed 25 mpg on highway trips, which is great considering the pre-2008 EPA highway estimate for the car was 25 mpg, as these numbers can sometimes be a bit too generous. Perhaps it's because I don't drive like a fleeing suspect all the time, which may also explain why the OEM Yokohama Advan A046s lasted for over 25k miles while still having enough tread for me to sell them on the forums for some reasonable pocket money. And while I don't thrash my car, rest assured that I do have fun with it at times. As a side note, before my Evos, I came from a 1998 Mercedes-Benz E320, which contrasts sharply to an Evo, and I didn't really have any complaints about the harshness of the Evo, though I do miss cruise control sometimes.

Absolutely, but I'd assume that the OP has already taken that into consideration. I don't think he was looking for the cheapest route to getting an Evo, he just wanted to know what everyone recommended. Obviously I don't think he's foolish enough to pass up a great deal on an VIII if he found one, but it's not even certain if he wants to mod it to the point where he goes with an aftermarket turbo, which of course would not show much advantage to a IX over an VIII at that point.

I would never label the VIII as inferior, though as everyone knows, if you're not going with an aftermarket turbo, the IX's potential is much easier and cheaper to exploit compared to an VIII, mod-for-mod. Throw in the nicer-looking interior (not by a huge margin but the black steering wheel looks sharper and the seating surfaces are better), smoked headlights and taillights, better front bumper (though this is subjective), and the IX grows more appetizing. Don't get me wrong though--VIIIs with front lips can look pretty mean, as part of me was even considering buying a white VIII RS as a track toy, though I don't really have the money for it at this point in time.

Yea i would be planning on eventually adding a bigger turbo with supporting mods.
Do you think i should get the viii then over the ix.
How does the ix make more power with lets say a gt35r turbo oppose to a viii with the same turbo and supporting mods?
Thanks

Firing from the hip here:
If you plan to do very few mods, I'd probably go with a IX or a X, cost aside. I love my IX, but as a matter of personal preference, I like the look of the X much more. if it were me, I'd do that IX, however, YOU WILL LOVE ANY OF THEM. With that in mind, and cost is an issue, get what you can afford. Yeah, I know, way helpful. happy hunting!

If you can afford a IX, then you might as well get it. There's no harm in it. But if it's a bit over your budget, then go for the VIII. When you go with aftermarket turbos, the difference in hp and torque increases will be far less significant compared to if you stuck to bolt-on mods shy of a turbo swap. I don't have any personal experience with doing these mods, but what I've read from a lot of reputable posters with tuning experience, a IX with a turboback exhaust and a good tune will yield around the same as a VIII with the same mods but with cams, which is a plus if you don't want to open up the head. I don't really know what the output difference is when you compare an VIII to a IX while both have identical aftermarket turbos, so perhaps someone else will chime in with that knowledge.

hey man, i'm not far from you. i'm over in tinton falls.

your best bet is between the VIII and IX. from there, since you seem set on an aftermarket turbo, all it comes down to is personal preference, and/or which you can get a better deal on. if the seats, wheels, headlights, tailights, and bumper of the VIII don't bother you, you may find a better deal on an VIII. good luck on your search.

Thanks for the info.
If i wanted to eventually build one or the fastest evos which would do better an ix or viii? Or would it not matter?
