Question About Drag Slicks.

As the title states. I am looking for slicks. I know of the Hoosiers, (I actually live about 20 minutes from there plant/warehouse). But I was told they actually make a Slick specific for Evo's. Now I dont know dick about tires, other than street tires and what is good and what is bad, what sizes are good for certain sized wheels, yada yada... The only thing I am having trouble with, is how in thee hell, you pick out a slick to fit a 17x8 rota torque (i believe this is stock size for the evo 8's, also 05+sti's. I'm not looking for drag wheels, as I have 04 sti brembos and hubs (5x100... BOOOO), but I am curious as to specs i need for a 17x8 wheel that i can fit in my wheel wells, I dont need monsterous ones like some of you 1000+ hp guys run, I just need a moderate one like what I have seen on EmeryatSTM's evo. Like I said, I dont know dick about slicks, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

REMEMBER!!! THIS IS FOR A 17x8 wheels

If i am not mistaken, STM has switched to 16" wheels, like most of the other shops, then run a full sized Hoosier or similar. Now if you're trying to use the stock wheels, a few people have been running the MT motorcycle slicks. Good luck.

Well a slick will be a lot harder on the drive train, If you go to my intro page in this section, you can see the video of me running my silver car (I know it isnt an evo, oh well).. I am spinning through 1st (with an easy launch, I didnt dump it or try and launch very hard), With a slick, you are going to have a lot less chance of spinning, well to a certain extent (bajillion hp for instance), I am running 245/40/17 Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs, and in that pass I lowered the tire pressure to 24psi. Now that I am going to be pushing more boost, more power, yada yada, I need a slick to get me out of the hole (thats what she said). I saw some stuff about the motorcycle slick on here, David Buschur was talking about air seeping out of the tires because they arent meant for the weight of a car. I was kind of curious as to any info on like a 245/**/17 Slick made for cars. I didnt see any other info in that thread and cant seem to find it.

I too am interested in this! I was actually just coming on here to look for info.

I know that Emery's car on the Hoosier QTPs are run on a smaller than stock size wheel, I believe they are indeed a 16in wheel. The downside to getting that size tire to fit with that size wheel on an Evo is a small brake kit is necessary up front because a 16" wheel wont clear the OEM caliper.

Im gonna first see how I do on my Conti DSW's and if Im not in the 1.6X range Im gonna switch over to a dot slick for the track. I want something also that is a stock size wheel (17x8) but wrapped in a slick for the track (like a 235/50 for that nice 26+ inch diameter)

I would look around for a good drag radial. I hear good things about the new Nittos and Mickey Thompson makes good ones too.

^^ Yea see I upgraded to the STi brembos (same things as evo's i believe), And cannot run a smaller wheel in the front I think a 235 will stretch though? I am not too sure, I know that the 245/40 dunlops are meaty on the 17x8. Which I do like a lot! I also saw that on the motorcycle slicks, if you have a 17x8, they will stretch a little, the earlier 04 STi's (maybe the 04 STi's in general, were a 17x7.5 which didnt give the motorcycle slick stretch. I want meat! I dont want hella flush stretchness on a drag setup

You want width? Or you want height??

The continentals I have right now are 245/40. In inches, thats not even a half an inch of extra width per tire compared to a 235.

A taller tire will help your trap speed, which is why the guys running QTP's go with those tires because they are a 26 inch tall tire and they hook well. Personally Id rather have the height of the tire rather than width for a slick to help the trap speed out.

very true, but I wouldn't want to have a stretch. I would like both please Really all I want is a slick that will fit a 17x8 I was looking at drag radials, and I hear the Nitto 555r's blow big.... I was looking at the BFG Drag radials but I dont feel like have a 225 on a 17x8, and I dont think a 275 will fit on a 17x8, I was looking at Mickey Thompsons but i dont think they have any in a 17 that will fit good on a 8" wide wheel. I would love some ET Street Drag Radials! But unfortunately I dont see any that will fit.

False. Slicks will be easier on your drivetrain. The star specs have a very stiff sidewall and are not good drag tires because they will wheel hope and get inconsistent traction which will break stuff. The slicks have a ton of flex and will absorb big shocks which would otherwise be sent into your drivetrain.

Edit: BFG makes a good radial but it is a 225 and is shorter than the stock tire.

Hmm... that is weird. I figured a slick would be less forgiving being as sticky as they are. I never wheel hopped on my star specs. They just spun. I noticed that Evo's get a lot more wheel hop than Subarus. I am not sure if it is true, but just from experience with driving a fully built fp black evo and my car on same tires, same tire pressure, the evo wheel hopped quite a bit, not a lot, but maybe for little less than a second, and with my car didnt wheel hop at all. both spun like crazy.

Did that Evo that wheel hopped have solid mounts all over?? Ive never heard of an Evo having wheel hop.

As for "stretching" what do you mean by that?

Yea he has a lot, I've seen a few Evo's have wheel hop. Where the tire is a little bit too small for the wheel, for example, and this is a crazy stretch, but like a 225/40/18 on a 18x9.5 wheel.
