Looking to get an evo in the future (question regarding burning oil)

Hi noob here

I've always liked the evo but i've backed off from it here and there due to how temperamental the 4G63 is.

From what i've seen in the past spun bearings on these motors are pretty common. Same goes for burning oil.

can anyone here confirm or correct my understanding? i would love to get a '03 sometime in the next year or two. anything else i need to know?

i know the transfer case on these tend to have problems due to the way these cars are driven.

current ride (puts flame suit on)

Hell, no flame suit for that car, i like it!

I myself hadn't had any problems out of my 03, 120k miles on her and still going strong, until i started modding, and racing her at the track. still then, with 120k on it, she ran good, but the TC started whining.

if you take care of the car are service is regularly and by the book, you shouldnt have any more problems out of it, than you do out of the VW.

Zip ties holding on the front plate?
Did you take the two pics on the side of the road taken during a brakedown?
Sorry couldn't resist...... Kidding!

Nice VW though, looks clean.

how come ive seen more than a handful of evos under 80K miles with spun bearings? bad maintenance record and careless ownership?

unfortunately not many evos have high miles so i dont have anything to go on besides bad motors with low miles.

NY and NJ are probably two of very few states that require it

I think the problems you have seen are probably due to bad maintenance ! The 4G63 is a very tough motor even though everyone who has one of these cars beat the **** out of it !

<grin> I've heard the Moon is made out of Green Cheeze. Must be true. You have access to an excellent search engine. It might be a good idea to make use of it. Good luck.

Tempermental???? If you are comparing older DSM's to the the evo motor......don't.

There are guys putting down everything from 450-600hp on stock block. Upgrade rods/pistons/cams and the skys the limit.

All turbo cars burn a little oil (in my experience). Nothing excessive on the evo.

Yea, my SE burns maybe ~1/4 quart between oil changes. My RS was about the same, hardly noticeable.
