It was a FQ400 saddled with a big, laggy turbo in 6th just past idle. Slow? Can't imagine why.

That test was ridiculous.

Theres no reason to do that. Why not down shift? Cant imagine anyone with a brain trying to do that especially while trying to overtake.

boost wont come on until you're past 3k rpm give or take. no matter if you mash the pedal or not. so, i really don't understand the question. i've been at 1800-2000 rpm and went full boost in 5th. but since it doesn't boost until 3k, it didn't lug.

For sure Im not the Guru. I do understand the question.

Say you're at approx 40mph in 5th, (Non 6th gear MR) & you go WOT, the engine load is very high & boost is peaking at approx max.

My guess it would be better to drop a gear, reducing boost, & then dropping it into 5th.

Been there!!!

Peace

that's what i don't get. at 40mph in 5th, @wot, engine load will be high, but boost will not MAX at that rpm. it just lags until the turbo catches up @ 2800 and up. give or take. lugging is different. like 5th gear @ 20 mph, then wot. then again, why would you do that?

The few times Ive gone WOT in 5th at 40mph or so, My gauge is reading approx 27psi, which is max boost for my set up

i'm not calling you out or anything, so don't get the wrong idea. it's just that the turbo has barely begun to spool at that speed. it will not spike to 27psi. that would mean the turbo would be throttle dependant, which it is not. that's why theres lag. unless you got anti lag or something. i dunno. whatevs.

Agreed ^^^^^ but more or less want to know how bad it is on the car to lug a 4 cylinder turbo with our gear ratios. Here is an example I can provide..... I went and tuned my car and was out testing it out with the tuner. Well I cam down the road and he told me to turn around and get on it again well I turned around in the middle of the street in 2nd gear.

The rpm's were at like 1600-1700 R's and he said you should not do that it is hard on a vehicle and I told him I didnt know that it was new to me. Now this tuner has been in the EVO world for quit awhile so I trust what he says.

oh, ok. yeah, lugging a vehicle at low rpms is hard on the vehicle. like too high a gear for the rpm. ( like 5th @ 20 mph.) it would have nothing to do with boost, or the turbo for that matter. it's like that for all manual cars. this car is like any other vehicle other than the turbo and AWD. you gotta be in the right gear for the speed you are at.

If i remember correctly the FQ-400 test started at a complete standstill. So imagine trying to drive any car in 6th gear from a standstill. It always going to be a slow race and extra cylinders make the difference.

The car won't move in 6th from standstill. The FQ and the Fiat were rolling at 30MPH:
