Checked out this Evo today...
Hey guys Ive been in the hunt for an Evo for awhile now checked one out today and have some questions. First off, when the car was running I noticed white smoke coming from the tailpipe. I know black is bad and I thought the smoke was suposed to be clear/unnoticable. When I asked him why the white smoke he said its was becasue he had just washed the car. I also noticed the strong smell of gas. Maybe the air-fuel ratio was off thats why im asking you guys. Also, at a stop sign the car stalled. He commented that was weird and he didnt stall it out from the clutch so im wondering if that could indicate anything. Nothing similar happend the rest of the trip. Lastly, all 3 acd lights are on and he said theyve been on for about a year. Hes had the ACD Pump replaced twice and took it to sheppard and they said the pump was bad. Sheppard wanted to take the pump out all together and the guy decided to leave it in. Could you guys eleborate on all these problems?
Im no mechanic but all that would lead me to walk away from the car. My car does not smoke white after its washed, heck it doesnt even do it after i clean the exhaust up. Car stalling plus the 3 acd lights being on. None of that sounds too good. Does he have reciepts from the ACD pump being replaced? How many miles is on this car? mods? who tuned it?
D. ACD unit fault – 3 solid lights
(this was stolen from an ACD thread in EVOM)
When your ACD unit has all three lights on at the same time (other than at startup), this means your car is reporting back to Mitsubishi headquarters that your warranty should be voided… Just kidding. As stated in your owners manual, this denotes some kind of error in the unit and it needs to be serviced. To service the ACD you need a very special, and very expensive tool from Mitsubishi. This tool is used to engage the ACD pump to bleed the lines. You may run into this issue if you are changing out your transfercase. (6)
So if the ACD lights have been on for a year and he has had the pump replaced twice, obviously something is wrong. I do not know alot about these cars but dont you kind of need the pump in the car for the ACD to accurately work?
Anyways if i am giving you bad information here i apologize, but i will say that i wouldnt trust this guy and i would probably just walk away

The guy does have documentation for the ACD pump being replaced and it was done through sheppard transmissions which is a pretty crediable source. Thanks for your info though ^^ anyone else on the ACD lights, stalling, and white smoke? Also no mods completely bone stock with 67k miles
NP, and ya Shep is reputable so i would believe that, so umm ya dont know what else to tell you. Plenty of smart guys around here though so im sure you will get the answers you are looking for eventually.
Based on what? sorry guys this is a learning process for me so I want as much info as possible. And the smoke was just a plain white not blueish. I found this thread which made sence about the white smoke http://30-130.com/showthread.php?t=237938

so far you have seen 3 problems with the car,(This was all during a short ride/drive i assume?) Stalled out for no reason, white smoke upon start up, and a broke/messed up ACD system which hasnt been able to be diagnosed yet. This all means
1. Money you are going to have to spend eventually to get the car running
2. If the white smoke is from burning oil you got some engine issue- Possible problem-
Head gasket leak, Oil burning will be at startup from worn valve rings/seals and during driving from overfilling at first a lot, then only at heavy acceleration/g forces when demand is high. Again--smell, check all your fluid levels (OIL, WATER, TRANS) of course, whatever is low is what you are BURINING (or for the one gent that gets particular, boiling).
White smoke is caused by engine coolant/Antifreeze being processed in the combustion chamber(s) of the engine.
White smoke can and DOES come from coolant burn off in the oil due to a leaking or blown head gasket, cracked head etc.
This was all taken from google so whatever, but these are all indications that the car is going to be problematic for you. Just walk away unless you have the money to possibly rebuild the engine shortly down the road,

^^^Thanks for the time you spent looking into my specific issues. Dang though, I was really hoping this was the right car. The test drive went great other than the stall out. I would obviously ask him to get all issues taken care of before the purchase. I think what i'll do is tell him im interested pending an inspection for the ACD lights, smoke, and random stall out. Whether he will do that or not im not sure.
k man if there is white smoke it means 2 things.
1. check the head gasket, it might be blown ( that will explain the car stalling)
2. turbo with bad bearing.
For the 3 light on the odometer it means that either the system has air or the pump is bad, also can be a bad ground on the acd ecu.
