Hey everyone new evo 8 mr owner

Hey guys just got my evo last weekend. It has 62k on the clock. Drove to Colorado from Wyoming to get it. I paid 16 otd for her. After the test drive i could smell a little coolant but went ahead and bought it. Sure enough 3 days later the water pump started leaking. My evo buddy is replacing it as well as all the timing with a gates belt. Went ahead and got a exhaust manifold, tbe, intercooler hard piping, intake as well as a mbc. Going to Colorado when its done to get her tuned. I'm hoping for a hair over 300whp with around 20lbs

Well congrats on the car. Sorry about the bad luck tho, those mods for the car should put you in the 300whp range np with that amount of boost or more. should also get a turbo timer and some gauges as well.

Will get pics when I get the car back

I ordered gauges also got the tripple a pillar mount, got my wideband in there as well as boost, not sure on the third one yet. I was thinking egt but I might just do a oil temp/pressure combo gauge.

I got some weird questions for the car as well. My friend has a 06 mr evo 9. My vin number says its a mr, the title says its a mr, and the original window sticker says its a mr. But I only have a 5 speed, and I dont have the shark fins. They were on the roof at some point in the cars life though because theres a perfect scratch across the entire roof.

The car also has the alluminum hood, roof and trunk. I believe these are MR only items? In a evo 8 is it possible to have a mr without a 6 speed? The car already has different suspension so I cant check to see if it has the bilsteins.

It sounds like the previous owner blew the original transmission and replaced it with the 5-speed. All Evos have aluminum hoods and fenders. MR, SE, and post-04 RS have aluminum roofs. An aluminum trunk was not a feature. The MR differs from other Evos by the virtue of its suspension and its transmission (with associated bits). A Vortex Generator (shark fins) doesn't really mean much. Half the cars here have one of those things glued to their roofs.

If you don't mind me saying, read a bunch before buying more parts, and get to know what you're working with. Good luck.

Ok maybe thats what happened. The car has a bunch of aftermarket company stickers so Im thinking it was modded at some point. I still got a lot of learning to do, my friend has a 06 evo9 with what I have and made 330whp so I was just going to copy him for now. I thought it had a allimunum trunk because it was light but I guess not. The reason I think/know the roof is alluminum is because where the shark fins were left a good scratch the bare medal and theres no rust at all.

It's most likely a safe guess.

That may or may not be a good idea, depending on what he did, how his car is tuned, the car's drivability, its intended application and a multitude of other factors. This is the basic mod path for a VIII - TBE, MBC, fuel pump and a tune. Cams come next. Everything else, sans perhaps a good FMIC depending, essentially amounts to fluff on a mildly modded car. FWIW, aftermarket exhaust manifolds have been known to lose power over stock in similar conditions. This, in part, is why you should do your own legwork.

If you haven't done so already, I'd strongly suggest taking the car to an Evo-specific shop having it looked at.

The reason I think/know the roof is alluminum is because where the shark fins were left a good scratch the bare medal and theres no rust at all.
Aluminum roofs have a "rail" running down each side. It's there to strengthen the aluminum.

Ok didn't know about the manifold. I just wanted to get all the bolt ons out of the way at once so I could get it tuned now and drive the car relatively stock til I can afford to rebuild the motor and do cams and a turbo down the road

There are a lot of thing going on here - parts removed, parts added - and no one seems to have logged the car. Your car could be running OK, or the motor could be at risk every time you open the taps. There's no way of knowing right now. Your friend probably talked to you a lot about the car, but do yourself a favor and rely on your own wits. You seem like a bright guy with a good head on your shoulders. Look around, and have the car checked out by a shop that specializes in Evolutions. Is there such a place in your area?

Nope there isn't a shop that specializes in anything here. I gotta trailer the car to Colorado for the tune. That's why I was wanting to do everything all at once cause there's no one local
