why so hard to drive?

ok......let me start off by saying i am a new owner of a 06 IX SE. I have been on this forum for many years and i love it. I've had the evo for a little over 2 months now and its great except i am having such a hard time shifting when i get on it. high rpm shifts are really boggy, jerky and just plain god awful.

Some background info.... i am 24, first manual car owned, first manual car driven EVER. i know, i know.......get a civic and practice on that. Well, i bought the evo because i've been in love since it came to the US but was only recently able to afford it.

Car has aftermarket clutch...i believe it is ACT Heavy Duty.

Being that this is my first manual car, i have no previous experience to compare anything I am doing too. I dont know if im doing it right or wrong. Normal driving is fine...smooth and proper. upshifting/downshifting no problem. I dont beat on the car at all, really. I have about a 37 mile commute each way and i would really enjoy being able to attack the on-ramp twice a day but im so afraid that im going to break something because of the way i've been shifting.

I am basically at the point where i would pay someone to help show me how to do it.....reading explanations online doesnt really help. I live in Rockland County, NY work in Morris County, NJ. If anyone would be willing to spend an hour with me and try to help me out i would buy lunch/dinner/beer whatever or just give you some money for your time.

please dont flame/bash/banter/etc.....

Could be a couple of things.

The Clutch you have in there is known to have issues shifting at higher rpms. The clutch pedal might not have ever been adjusted and is in need to be.

When you are shifting at higher rpms what is your foot like on the clutch pedal? Do you slowly lift it off, dump it, any slipping etc.

Not sure about the clutch pedal adjustment because i bought the car with it already in.... the clutch does grab pretty high up though......i can let the pedal out about 50% and it will just start to feel it grab from a stop.

when trying to shift fast i would say its pretty hard to slip or let off slowly. would i call it dumping the clutch? idk.....i mean i know its supposed to be rough but not like this

If the car was tuned before, you could have the Tephra Mods patch and the "No Lift Shift" enabled. With this enabled, if you go to WOT with your foot even resting on the clutch, there is a chance the NLTS could engage and disengage quickly, causing a horrible jerk and bog.

I wish there was an easier way to test ... but take the car out and go to WOT in 3rd gear or so. At around 4000 RPM or so, keep your foot matted to the throttle and fully depress the clutch. If the RPM falls, then you have NLTS and that's likely the problem. If it rises and hits the limiter, you have another issue ... likely the timing of your shifts. But, if it's as bad as you describe, then I'd bet on the NLTS mod. Of course, if it overrevs when you try this, let off the throttle.

Here is the thread with lots of description and logs of what the NLTS "bucking" is like ... it might help you decide if it's what you have.

Actually, looking back through that thread reminded me ... when I had the issue, I could trigger it by just tapping the clutch while at full throttle. That would be a better and safer test.

i wouldnt suggest trying to NLTS feature if you dont know if you have the Tephra Mod patched or not... im going to assume its not on there if you didnt ask for it... most tuners dont throw that patch on there unless you specifically ask for them to do it

You would barely need to push the clutch down at all to see if this is the issue. If RPMs drop then you'll know.

We can test this out easy enough. As for the tuning I'm guessing it was tuned prior to you owning the car.

Heck jerking like your explaining I've seen caused by something as stupid as the DV/BOV on backwards.
