Need advice for engine Rebuild

Hi there guys,

this my first thread , in the last couple years I used to read only but now it is time came to ask Qs and take experiances from you guys what I call them (Experts)

the Sad Story

My Evo X engine is almost dead cuz of overheatin, i was running 1.8 bar racing with a lamborghini Gallardo that night and after done with race my freind in the back saying that a heavy white smoke is coming out from the cat-backs. so i took the car to the garage today and dicovered that the forth piston is lack of pressure. the engine will be opened for the first time, so i will change the pistons and the connecting rods only, and leave the stock crank as it is.

so i need a good spec from you guy to start this project to deliver a 500-550 WHP range. My current setup is :

HKS Hi-Power Exaust system
Custom intake system
Tuned (POS)
and the rest are tottaly stock

MY budget is around $5500

so what are your recommendations guys ??

thank you ,
Ahmed

With 5500$ you won't be hitting 500 whp because the clutch is going to be 1500, turbo 1500ish, fuel system 1000ish, FMIC + piping 1000ish... And you haven't even touched your engine yet... So I think you should reconsider your maths a bit before aiming for them numbers...

You might have better luck sticking this in the Evo IX section rather than the X

With 5500 for just the engine I would talk to AMS for their stroker. Your questions might be better asked in the Evo IX section instead of the X as the others stated though.

In the OP's information it says:

Drives: Evo 9 MR Edition

But in his actual post he says "My Evo X engine". I'm willing to bet he's in the correct forum and just hasn't updated his information sheet yet.

MR Edition - Are you looking for a full engine build or are you merely looking for information on what kinds of rods/pistons to go with?

If you were looking for a full engine build, there are many vendors on these forums who could help you out; Buschur, AMS, and MAPerformance come to mind immediately. If you are looking for rods/piston ideas I am sure someone will chime in with some ideas for their favorites.

Good luck!

As a guy that has built an Evo X engine...unless you do work yourself, you are looking at a minimum of probably $8,000 unless your block is salvageable, then maybe you could get by with $5500.

Didn't catch that lol. You sir are a better reader than I

Evo X stuff is still very expensive compared to that of the earlier generations. So as murlo pointed out unless you do it yourself odds are you wont be getting an engine built under $5500.

If its for Engine internals and your block is reusable than 5500 will get you everything you need but you must be patient in finding good parts for low prices because if it going in the engine you never ever want to open it again EVER.
Look around the forums to see if you can find people selling parts still new but lower prices because they changed there mind.

As for as the machine work I hope you have a great local shop if not call AMS and get ready to mail your baby out!

I just don't see this happening for $5500.

The X's i have seen fail almost always need a new short block...but maybe this one doesn't.

Regardless you need a new oil pan, cooler and pump, probably new block (2500) if you want to put another stock one in $5500 is easy, but you will need a few thousand for machine work and labor too.

Also new headgasket, new oil/filter, head studs probably better bearings if you want to upgrade...there are so many things people forget about. I'd be surprised to get a complete build by doing just drop ins for $5500 without pulling the motor.

5500 will build a motor that isn't blown, so long as it needs minimal machine work. blown? add quite a bit as murlo said

fix the motor first, than save up for more parts.

Isn't blown you are probably talking $1500-$2000 to rip stuff apart and install everything. 600 for pistons, 700 for rods (using good ****) 200 for bearings, 100 for headgasket, 100 for oil stuff, 80 for new spark plugs, you should hone it for sure.....

You know what, you'd still need to pull the motor, or you should to get an overbore and hone...I just don't think its possible to do for $5500 unless you can do all the labor yourself...I just don't see it.

Per cobb plano:

1250 pistons/rods combo (discount via map)
200 bearings
100 headgasket
250 misc (oil, plugs, etc)
700 machine work (.020 overbore/hone to pistons)
2500 cobb's labor charge for it all
= 5000 + tune = 5400

it'll be more if I want to go sleeved, but a small overbore drop in build comes to 5500 all inclusive :-)
