IMO, if you don't get the SE you will regret it since you're already having remorse. Do you think it will ever go away? It's what is going to leave you content and satisfied at the end of the day...

I say wait awhile until it's better financially and trade it in for an MR or SE.

btw, I still suck at manual transmissions and drive it in LA traffic all the time... and I still love it.

I had a VIII before my 2010 MR, both have there pluses and minus' but I love them both. in traffic i hated my VIII and especially traffic where most people are idiots. but at the same time with the manual it was alot of fun, cause you shifted when you wanted to, you could keep the power up where you wanted. the comfort and ease of driving in the MR though is very nice, especially after long days at work when you don't want to mess with anything and just get home. i would say rather than going farther into debt just keep it, still a great car, but if you really want the MR and you won't be happy without it, then just do it. I am very happy with my MR, but at times miss my VIII.

If you do decide to go for an se do yourself a favor and sell private.... then go into the dealership with a clean slate. You think it will only be a 5-6k gap now... youll end up popping out the other end 10k more deep when they brain wash you and give you jack for your trade.

Can't wait to get my MR. I don't really look at the tranny as a true auto and not sure why everyone Keeps calling it an auto. I guess they really haven't driven one. My ultimate plan is to keep the 8 and daily drive the MR. Good luck with your decision can't go wrong either way.

Interestingly enough I was in a similar situation as you. I have a GSR with navigation and the aero kit, it's a 2008, and I initially went for the GSR because I didn't want to pay the money to own an MR. I got an awesome deal on mine as well, 38k sticker for 31k and 0%, in the color that I had been scavenging the country side for almost 8 months. I also bought it because I wanted to evolve as a driver, from previously having only automatics and mainly a drag strip guy. This was my first manual transmission car. I also purchased it because the SST is very new and very expensive to replace and can not hold the power that the GSR can.

But yet I find myself wanting the SE or MR touring, because I know that I won't mod my GSR beyond basic bolt ons (initially I thought I would), s#*t I still might. The clutch work is most annoying to me when my shoes are wet from rain or snow and I am slipping off and on the clutch pedal. The SE seems to fit my needs perfectly, newly married, kids in the near future, having a 2nd vehicle that my wife can drive in an emergency (I love her but am very reluctant to teach her stick on my evo, it already had enough abuse having me learn).

That being said I only thought that I would be upside down about another 4-5k as well until I looked at all of the angles, it does end up closer to 11k. At 4-5k I could justify it to my self, the money for the additional options that I wanted, primarily the sst, I looked at it like modding, for 4-5k if I could have heated seats, an sst, and a colored multi option screen, that's not that bad.

Here were my figures. I paid 31k for my car, 33500 after taxes; at trade in is only approx 25500, the SE priced well is about 33000 after taxes 35500. So I would have stood to lose 33500-25500=8000 as well as had to pay an extra 35500-33500=2000 dollars for the upgrade. Totaling 10k. This just was not worth the upgrade to the SE for me; I can not justify a 10k difference in price between the two. This is how I arrived at my conclusion to keep my car and be satisfied in the financial security of the 5MT and its proven history.

As stated earlier in this thread, as an evo owner most can appreciate the differences in the cars and most like both. To me the financial loss and risk of the sst are not worth it. Keep driving the GSR until it's in the grave. BTW, Mitsubishi will continue to make the evo, they also will continue to improve the sst design and reliability, it will be on other future evos, and you will also want the new evos when they come out, those damn marketing folks always know how to add something else to make us want the next years model.

As for me, being in the same boat you were in, I'm going to keep what I have and cherish the 95% of the time that I love driving the 5MT transmission.

Sorry for the long winded response, hope this helps.

Actually your numbers are even worse for switching to SE, they would be a total of:
1. (new car price - selling price) * (100% + tax rate) = Difference you pay today to buy new = (33000-25500) * 1.08
2. (old total price - selling price) = Difference you have already paid through depreciation = (33500 - 25500)

(33000-25500) * 1.08 + (33500 - 25500)
~ 16k

I had already included tax. But the OP gets the point. It costs alot more than you initially think. So, my advice is to keep it and learn to love it, or truely appreciate the times that you do enjoy driving it.

The only way to benifit from buying a new car is to drive it until it is no longer cost effective to do so, for this car probably in the 200,000 mile range, I would hope.

Hey, no problem, I have received alot of help from various members on different car forums over the years, I try to give back to the community some of what has been given to me. As a side note, how do you like your ETS peices? This is my next modding step, exactly what you have in your sig, the ETS intake, intercooler, and intercooler piping.

I feel like an ETS d-rider everytime I post about them but honestly, I can't say enough good about the company as a whole. The products are definitely carefully crafted and they stand behind them 100% with great customer service. Probably the smoothest and easiest install I have ever done on a car, no quirks in the fitment, no zip-tie engineering necessary Everything fits like factory, and you will love your car even more with that ETS intake.. makes that factory turbo scream Well sound like it anyway.

You wont regret the decision to go ETS.

As for my decision, I have decided to keep my GSR

I think you made the right decision and will appreciate it more if you ever decide to make some reduiculous power with this X. That's where the MR's show their weakness, wether it be 8,9 or 10.

Just got offered a position today after I graduate in may, with a substantial pay increase. Priorities off the top of my head:

Find a house, find a beater, MAYBE find a ring for my girl , make a phone call to ETS, 500+ whp weekend warrior.
