Im THINKING/HOPING its the thermostat but I'm not sure...ill drive my 05 VIII for 30 minutes or so...let it idle at a light and the temp gauge shoots up to near max and drops back down to normal...its an off and on issue and i can definitely hear the fan turn on so I dont believe thats the problem...Do you guys think its the thermostat or what? its out of warranty so im trying to see if I can get some help on figuring it out before I bite the bullet and go to the dealer... let me now if you guys have any idea what it may be ...Im Jack by the way, owned a 03 VIII, sold it and now Im back =)
Typically the T-stat, if faulty, will either stay open at all times or will not open at all. This is of course only my opinion and based purely on my experiences. I had similar problems before with a 1990 Toyota Celica GT, it had a short in the wiring to the fan, like a pinched wire, and would only operate when the connection was being made. Have you checked to be sure your fan is operating properly? If it is then I have one more question, have you changed the water pump or is there any white smoke coming out of your exhaust?

Any time the temperature reads anything but normal swap out the thermostat. It might be something else but a thermostat is a cheap part. Plus, you have eliminated one possible cause.
Help Puhleeeeeeaase Meeesterr
Hey everyone, I thought Id ask just in case I could get any more hints on what the problem may be but i own an 05VIII, i put the keys in the ignition this morning in the garage and my car will crank but not start. RIGHT BEFORE THIS, at the gym last night, I turned the key in the ignition and there was no power at all (no electronics, ac, lights functioning,) so i popped the hood, simply tapped the positive battery terminal connection, there was a VERY VERY SMALL spark and everything turned on, i got in the car and car started fine and i drove home fine. but when i tried to start my car this morning, it cranks now, but no start. Im THINKING possible bad battery (even though its pretty new =/) OR bad 10a ignition fuse? I get off work soon and im gonna go pick up a new battery but i decided to ask just in case you folks may have any ideas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Normally, you know i would agree with you on the battery but the only thing that makes me think otherwise was that when it originally had no power what so ever, i tapped the battery terminal and everything came on you know? i dont know its weird...i did end up tightening both positive, negative terminals back up but ya normal crank and i dont have tactrix cable but im gonna check fuses when i get home.. appreciate the suggestion

yea once again...i tightened it up, it started fine last night when i was at the gym, now this morning when i turn the key, it just cranks then nothing
this happens often.make sure your positive terminal is not dirty.put it on and twist the crap out of it left and right.then clean the terminal for dirt etc...then tighten it up real good..if the terminal is dirty you might get enough juice to crank but not to start..happened to me..
This sounds like a fuel problem to me..
If your car cranks like normal, the battery is not the problem.
I would also rule out the Ignition switch, as if it were broken, the engine would not crank.
Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you first turn the ignition to "ON"? If not, check the underhood fuse panel to see if the FUEL fuse is blown. Check the owners manual to find the exact location, but I believe it is the yellow mini fuse closest to the firewall, #15 maybe.
Good luck!

If you had a problem with the car doing nothing at all, you touched your battery, then the car works perfect, and now it's slow starting, my limited experience would say:
I highly doubt its a fuel issue
Batteries can do funny things on their way out, and I would start here, as well as addressing all the connections to the battery. Make sure they're snug and free of corrosion.

Thanks for your help guys, so far, I checked the 10a fuse that was recommended..I DO hear the fuel pump prime for 3 seconds when the key is on the 'on' pos. And I replaced the battery. Same result. The car is trying to start but won't turn on. What's next? And right now I'm checking the connections to the battery btw
