Newbie. Deployed. Investigating.

Hello All. I'm Tom, 25yo, father-to-be, deployed to Iraq.

Long story short. I'm a huge car enthusiast, I have an affinity for cars. My true passion is LS powered GM vehicles. I was going to procharge a corvette when I got back, but as you've read, I have a son on the way and am in need of a sedan. I have a beater Jetta GT, but I want something more reliable, and partially as a reward for a year in the desert I'd like some kind of toy that is fun to drive.

So, what I need from you guys is a list of Likes, Dislikes, Pro's, Con's of ownership. I know about the paint - how bad is it? I'm really particular about my cars so it may not be an issue - I'll have to post up pics of my [sold] '06 Cobalt SS/Supercharged sometime, if it's one thing I can do, it's wash and detail a car.

I am also aware the insurance can be high, but this may not be an issue either since by the time I return my wife and I are going to consolidate under her insurance and the last of my offenses will have dropped off by then.

I would like to purchase new, but we'll see. Any advice you can give me their would be appreciated too. Common discounts, rebates, etc. Do you have any regrets with your Evo, any lessons learned? Things like that.

Thanks in advance.

First off, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Now back to the topic. The only regret I have about getting an EVO, is waiting as long as I did. I test drove and EVO in Aug of 2005 for a possible birthday car, but didn't buy one until Jan of 2007. Only thing I would have to say is it all depends on if you want Manual or Automatic Trans and what your ultimate goals are for the car. Can help us better answer the question if we knew a little bit more about your habits as a driver.

I definitely want manual. It makes the morning commute a little more engaging. My driving habits can best be described as the cliche term "spirited." For the most part I stay within 10mph of the speed limit. But I do like to feel it pull on the drive home from work. Other than that, I do not abuse my cars, no hard launches for the most part. Furthermore, I learned my lesson with past projects, I do not intend on going crazy with modification to this car since it will be a daily driver, and I doubt it will see a track. I need it to always pass inspection and I need to maintain it's reliability.

And my service is very much willing. Thank you for your support.
