I have several friends with both cars who auto-x allot and their times are always so close it doesn't really matter. If you plan to beat on it get the cheaper of the two and have fun.

Evo's can make amazingly good power on the stock turbo, whereas Subaru's need a bigger turbo and sometimes even a FMIC just to make the same power of an Evo that is maxing out the stock turbo. That being said, a newer WRX with exhaust and a tune will make nearly the same power as an STi, so that could be a cheaper route as well.

The obsessive nature of owning an Evo is part of the fun, but it can also be a bit taxing. All that said, bottom line is that the wrx is way cheaper, and it is a car I could own and just drive without obsessively worrying about it.
