Coilovers vs Springs?

Hello to all,

I am planning on lowering my 2009 Lancer GTS and I am in need of advice as to whether I should go with coilovers or lowering springs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I do not need them for racing or anything of the sort, I would just like to have a comfortable ride and improving the look of the car. I hear that both offer better handling and breaking, but not sure to which extent. All opinions are welcome, especially with respect to brands and models of kits recommended.

Ok, well as you can see, coilovers are going to be at least 1,000 more expensive. And if you get coilovers you don't want to go with eBay brands of coilovers. Meaning the cheapest you will want to spend for a set will be $1,500 on some Teins or equivilant.

Springs are what I think you're looking for. Since you have to ask this question, I dont think you're really aiming at getting coils. If you get springs, you won't have to worry as much about scraping on every driveway, parking lot and/or parking curb. Coils will make you scrape on all of the above. I went with Tein S-tech springs since they give the biggest drop in springs but still not enough that its a ***** trying to get everywhere without always sideways and slow over speed bumps. And the springs are only $250 shipped! Put the money somewhere else if you aren't autocrossing, they really wont benefit you otherwise.

My .02 cents.

I'm a noob to this too and looking at the same question myself. Coilovers from what I understand are height adjustable which is kinda nice for a year round DD. I'm more curious about prolonged wear on suspension between Coilovers and Springs. Will Springs cause the other suspension components to fail quicker?

If you just wanna improved the handling with small spending, go for springs. It will definitely look good too.

COILOVERS . no point in doing something twice .

im sure you can find 1PIECE for under a grand .

Yes lowering the car on springs will give you the look yo want and maybe a LITTLE handling . but often times stock shocks blow from being compressed so you will eventually have to replace them ..

Also .. Springs often leave the front a little higher .. not the look anyone goes for

now coilovers . can give the EXACT drop you want . raise it in the winter . lower in the summer . and even adjust the damper on them. stiff ride softer ride etc .

Yes 1piece are a little more expensive but they are totally worth it..

just my .02

my previous post was the answer to this in entirety without even reading your post . yes springs will cause other components to fail . and for a DD a summer set up and winter set up makes it totally worth it ...

This is NOT true. A quality spring like Swift or GTWORX will not harm other suspension components. Springs like Tein which lower the car too much DO harm other components (such as the struts and shocks) because they were not engineered correctly to go with the OEM components.

My evo has been on Swift springs for three years now with no issues. I love them. if you are seriously looking for information on suspension choices I would recommend some looking at the suspension forum here on EVOM. Many people have discussed the topic already.

good luck with your choice.

There's so much here I don't really have the time to cover it all. You really need to stop by the suspension forum.

With the above in mind, springs without a doubt. Cheaper, more durable, better ride, and best of all SAFER vs. cheap coilovers.

Then sell your car and buy a Caddy. Stock has among the best ride you're going to get. Lancers are not luxury cars, they're econoboxes.

Eibach Prokit springs will be among the best riding springs since they're progressive with an initial rate generally softer than stock.

Honestly, everyone is correct. But personally I would go with a daily affordable set of full coilovers. You can adjust your height and even your dampening depending on the product. You can get megan or ksport coilovers for 800 bucks. They're a lot better than springs in the long run.
