Evo X GSR / IX MR
Evo X GSR / IX MR
Hey guys. Just joined EvoM, and im looking for some advice. I am graduating college in May of 2013, and am almost certain I will be buying an X GSR or IX MR. I will be using the car as a 'spirited' DD as well as a few track days. I was wondering a few things:
1) If the XI comes out in 2013 as anticipated, would I still be able to buy a new X in May of 2013?
2) Assuming starting stock, about how much money would need be invested to get 300-350whp on the X GSR vs IX MR (assuming low 200s to begin so i've heard) and in what parts (in order)?
3) Anything else you feel like saying about either of the two cars to help me decide
I am currently leaning towards the X GSR at the moment due to improved daily drivability (pending test drive, obviously), improved safety, AYC, and other technological enhancements. However, the IX's nimbleness in weight, 0-60, 6-speed tranny and price attract me as well.
Thanks in advance for your help!
edit: feel free to share any random **** about either of the cars

^^ that 4G63 engine iron block for the win! If you are looking for a very strong platform to begin with and its even easier to mod and accessing parts in the engine bay than the EVO10.
i still haven't really seen where the X is getting its points in daily drivability - what is it? if you don't get the navi then.. what is the advantage? lcd screen in the gauge cluster? the ride isn't better compared to the IX MR w bilsteins, trunk space is terrible and rear leg room is better in the IX as well.. and MPG is far worse - I consistently get 27mpg highway in my IX when I'm on all seasons.
Safety is definitely there, and AYC is great too. Some workarounds to drivability and AYC in my sig

If i'll be goin for 300-350 whp, do u think the 4G63 would really be helpful? I've heard that the 4B11 can easily handle that

Thanks for all the replies so far!
Correct me if im wrong but i think the X has more noise isolation, a 'softer' suspension and has less of a 'raw' feel (not that I mind the noise and high RPM pull-- i just want something that won't kill my back and is relatively comfy)

suspension on the ix mr is fairly soft but that's for you to be a personal judge of - compared to most both cars are brutes but if you drive on fairly smooth roads you won't be able to tell. the x may have more noise isolation? but 5th gear is super short so if you cruise at 75 you will be hearing the engine a lot
edit: I will likely be in and out of boston, so no, not always the smoothest of roads

i've heard 5th gear 75mph in the X can be pretty loud from the engine, i think louder than the ix mr but in reality not THAT much difference.. but a couple hundred rpm does make some difference.. you need to ride both and check it out
OH here's a big one - IX does NOT have cruise control - the X does

At the risk of offending my X driving bros out there. I would say dollar for dollar the IX is a better 'driver's car'. If you want something that is more sporty sedan than sports car than the x is the better choice. I've driven an x but never owned one. They are great cars but compared to my ix the extra weight is obvious, the lack of acceleration (stock to stock) is obvious, and the additional price was obvious.
Of course you can make anything fast but the ix will be less expensive. For 350hp dynojet hp on a ix you need full turbo back exhaust (including o2 housing), intake, boost controller and a good tune on 93 octane. There is no real order about it just get those parts and then get it tuned and you should be able to get 350. I have 399awhp on the Virtual dyno with those parts plus a lower intercooler pipe and methanol injection (but I only have 90octane fuel to begin with).
I don't think you'll notice either having or not having AYC driving on the street. If you want to race the car (drag or autox) the advantage of having it is almost nothing.
I like the X, its a great car, its still an evo, if I couldn't have the ix the x would be a great alternative, but I would never trade my ix for an x.

can someone compare road noise of IX MR vs X GSR at 75mph--all other things being equal?
also compare IX MR's bilsteins vibration damping to that of the X GSR's (numbers wouldn't hurt)? Otherwise compare the suspensions?
fuel efficiencies?
is IX MR even remotely safe if I were to crash?
is X much safer?
thx for anything u can add

lol wow just go test drive the cars we've answered everything that's answerable
and i already mentioned the ix's mpg numbers are overall way better. no matter what if you crash you are probably gonna die.
ps ix has a rear wiper, x doesn't and has no option for one. it's pretty nice actually

I've owned a IX GSR and a X GSR, hands-down the X is the better car. It's much more enjoyable to drive on a daily basis, take on long road trips, etc. Even sitting in traffic it's smoother and more manageable. Call me old, but you couldn't pay me to give up my X and go back to a IX
They both mod/make power the same, especially in the 300-400whp range. Both my cars made similar power on similar mods.
