Question Buying First Car

Hi, im looking for my first car and i am unsure about which car i should buy. My budget is around $13,000 - $14,000 and i am looking at a newer lancer gts or an older evo. If any of you could help me decide it would be greatly appreciated. I am going to have an extra $2000 to upgrade it but im planning on using about $1000 to put in a sound system and tint windows and I am 17 if that changes any of your ideas. Thank you for your help

if you get an evo for 13 or 14, it will be older and probably higher mileage. i would save that extra 2 grand for a few months after getting it, in case any parts break on it. plus, a good exhaust, intake, bov, turbo, piping, or anything like that > tints and sound system

might get flamed for this but if you live in an area where its mostly nice weather, id go with the gts. you could get a good deal, warranty and piece of mind that it hasnt been beaten on. while an evo will be more fun, itll also be much more expensive to own and deal with.

a gts will still be fun and very, very mod-able

I live in southern california so it doesnt get that cold or rain that much but it can get pretty hot. And I am going to be getting more money to do stuff with the car and i was already planning on putting in a new exhaust and cold air intake. Does that mean that i should go with a GTS?

if you can find a clean evo for that price, that has a good history and hasnt been beaten on or ****ed with, get an evo. but the insurance and gas mileage will suck.

but then again it is an evo, and it will be worth it. if you can find that perfect car, go for it. but it might take some looking. the gts will be easy on the wallet and still fun enough. at the end of the day you gotta really decide for yourself.

ask youself do you want luxuries or do you want speed and looks? I got my evo 9 mr a year ago right before I turned 18 and I don't regret it at all. The thing is if you get an evo it'll be more of a hobby than just a car as opposed to the lancer. but I knew fom the beginning I wanted speed over anything and I bought the car near stock and now its fully built and can make 800whp

np. if you do find a nice evo and are unsure, you can always ask the guys on here what they think. they have an unreal amount of knowledge of these cars.

There is alot more work in a evo. Insurance is ALOT more expensive. Gas and milage, etc etc etc. Basically alot more cost's.

But if you have the $$$ to blow, then I say go for the Evo.

Other wise GTS

this. Keep in mind any top insurance company is going to be between 3-4 k a year for your age depending in deductibles. Especially living in so cal.

I'm 20 and found it hard to find a company that would even give me insurance. Different country but I'm sure its almost the same.

In the end it took some 'clever wording' to get the car insured

It's easy to get insurance here since it's the law nowadays and you're required to have it if you're driving on the road. It's just affording it is the problem and this car goes $250-$300 easily. My friend was paying $320 just for full coverage and he's only 23. He sold the car because payments with insurance was just too much and he wanted to move out of his dad's house.

Well my DD is a GTS and my 05 8 is my weekend car. There is a huge difference between the two cars. I say test drive both and go with which ever one you prefer. Budget wise that is another factor to consider as i havent seen too many decent evos for that price range you mentioned. Im in NorCal and there are local meets where i do meet folks that tell me that the price they paid for their evo are fairly cheap! I guess if you look hard enough you might find one! My 8 has 44k miles but i purchased it, it barely had 11k. GL!

I also DD a GTS, at your age I'd recommend going with an RA or a GTS. Buying the car is only the beginning, at your price range any evo you find is going to have some fine print attached to it, or it will have very high mileage. Either way, between insurance, regular maintenance, and gas prices you will be in a bind financially. Maybe you have a job that pays extremely well and maybe I'm wrong, but take into account the extra money that will be necessary to take good care of an evo.

Not to mention, you will be dying to mod it more, which in turn will get more expensive. Even if you don't plan to do anything to it now, just by reading these forums you'll find yourself addicted to modding, and youll want to upgrade parts/do different things to the car. I told myself I was going to leave the GTS alone minus some bolt ons because it was my DD. Despite having a dedicated weekend/track car, I still work on the GTS and find myself putting money into it. Just my .02!

I would go with the lancer...

What insurance company do you currently have? You should ask them for a quick 6 month qoute to see how much it will cost you for an evo. Ontop of that you have to think about about regular maintenance, gas, mods and the cost to cover anything that breaks. Unless you have a really good job, or mommy and daddy like to pay for everything I would really consider your options.
