Evo VIII reliability issues

Looking into buying a bone stock evo 8 as a daily driver; specifically, because of financial limits, a '03.

I've read in numerous places that the '03 year had a lot of issues, was wondering if anyone recently on the forum has gone through the process of buying a used evo 8 (2003) with 60,000+ miles and their experiences with the car thus far.

Would it be more worthwhile to wait a little longer, but get a '04 or '05?

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks in advance!!

Financial limits + Evo = does not make sense

theres some pretty big differences between the 03/04 and the 05 and 06. you dont have the front lsd, no mivec and no bilstein (model dependent)
if you have financial reasons to hold u back, i dont think u should look at getting an evo. imo

i just bought a late 03 with about 55k. the most important thing is maintenance. did the previous owner keep up with fluid changes and such. also did they do the 60k service. which cost about 1000 bucks. i had to do it too. AND importantly, how is the transfer case? does it whine, any problems? hows the transmission? does it have any lock outs, or grinds, pop outs? thats about the most important thing to look at when i bought mine bone stock.

Maintenance is key. Evo maintenance is pretty high cost however, it will pay off. Good luck.

Evo is one of the most reliable cars i have ever owned. And i owned every brand. The problem is not in the evo but the idiots who own them. When u buy a tired pre owned evo from someone it may need some tlc.

Just be alert when looking at one.

What i mean by financial limits is that i have a certain amount of cash available right now (around 16g's) to buy the car; more will come

anyways thanks for the useful feedback, keep it coming!

I got my 03 with about 120k on it. My t case was whining and had to do a 2nd timing belt job. Mileage isn't so bad as long as it stays up to date on maintenance like everyone says. Mines been serving daily duty just fine (after 1 major service appointment right after I got it), and it wasn't even stock when I got it.

As long as it's maintained good the car will treat you good.
