the whole way?

but i'm sure you still had a nice trip. road trips can be very fun. especially in a car like this. your mpg aint too bad either. i should be making a similar trip soon, but i wont be goin that far. i'll be more interested in my average mph not mpg. not speeding and driving like an idiot, just maintaining a nice constant speed throughout.

I get a consistent 24mpg in the city and 26 to 27 on the highway. I think the highest was like 27.3. All bolt-ons on a stock longblock and turbo assembly. And I'm on 235 width 340treadwear summer tires on the street.

I'm sure 30mpg is possible and I plan to make it happen. But it requires (IMO) things like a standalone to control cruise afr, bigger turbo (stay out of boost), lighter brakes/wheels, loose the big wing, etc.

Unlike most of the commenters here I actually do care about mpg. To fill my tank where I live costs approx $75. And I average something like 35k miles a year. Kinda adds up. I'm not going to go broke over bad mileage but it does free up cash for track days and mods and stuff.

Wrooooong! There's a bunch of sports cars or sports car like vehicles out there that are making 30mpg...a 335 gets 33 highway for one.

I had an ms3 and also had 150 mile round trip, I averaged 28-30 mpg high way. Very, very fun car. Just hated it was fwd.

no not really... any perceived benefits from a larger turbo are quickly eliminated by the required larger injectors...

I believe your 26mpg claim, but your not going to get 30mpg in an evo unless your going down a very steep hill with a hurricane force tail wind.

I know its possible too. I've datalogged the mpg realtime in my car and I know what vaccuum and speed gives the best gas mileage. Under ideal cruise conditions its 30mpg the way my car is right now. Its just very hard to drive like that. I only do it if I'm low on gas and the next station is 50miles.

Also the oil you use makes a big difference. On amsoil 0w30 I get crappy gas mileage. On motul 5w30 I believe I get the best. But I usually run 5w40. I'm sure there are other oils out there that could eek out more.

Also. Gearing DOES NOT help as much as you would think. I used to have a 6spd, and after that blew up I now have a shep ultimate ratio 5 spd with hks 4.11 fd gear. My rpms are lower at the same cruise speeds (more or less) but my mileage is no better. And people with the shorter OEM fd gear get the same mpg.

Yeah... it was difficult to hit 30 mpg and had taken several tries (though a couple came close).

I think my best tank average without being miserable was 27.1 mpg, where I was actually driving 75-80 mph and had the A/C on most of the time. I remember it clearly since it was the night of the De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight in December 2008, as I filled up before I drove to my cousin's house to watch the fight, then filled up at home again at the same station. That was an all-around good night.

You could get close to 30 MPG but you have to drive slower than a Prius. :}

I run large injectors so I already know they do not effect mpg since you run the same air/fuel ratio on either set.

Maybe I should have said closer to 30 than a stock turbo car

Possibly the gas here in NC is better than in CA and nets a better mpg?

It seems like I am always at the gas station. I avg. 17MPG and that is just combo of city/hwy driving. I think the tires and AWD have a lot to do with the poor MPG. My friends Z06 is an absolute monster and can get 26mpg since it is a 6 speed. If the Evo had 6 speeds, then I am sure we would have better mileage. It surprised my friends and family how poor MPG that the car gets, but it is rare and not seen as much as say a higher production car.

I was going to say I didn't think properly tuned injectors will affect fuel consumption.

It's the gearing. Sixth in the Vette is meant strictly as a cruising gear, being as tall as it is. Top speed is hit in fifth, if I'm not mistaken, so sixth isn't geared to have to hit that speed. In a lot of other cars, it's meant for both cruising and reaching the car's maximum speed, so it has to make a compromise. It's also because a car like the Vette has an engine with enough flexibility to run at such a low rpm while maintaining freeway speeds, but outside of highway driving, it'll still drink gas like a common V-8 would.
