Considering Evo..Whats MPG Like?
Like I said in my previous post in our particular cars (dunno about big NA v8s) the gearing is playing a lot less of a role than other factors. I went from stock 6spd to 5spd with evo IX 5th and HKS 4.11 final drive gear and still get almost exactly the same mileage. I don't think theres any difference at all. My friggin' intercooler pipes made more of a difference. And I still get the same mileage as almost everyone else on this thread with their shorter geared stock 5spd (~26 to 27mpg). My guess is to cruise at the same speed at a lower rpm you need more engine load to keep your speed constant, so you're using more gas.
Stop worrying about the gearing and look into the tune and your driving style.

I get 22ish as an average ... and I rarely beat on it.
Buy a lancer. =) 30+mpg all day long!!
^ I wouldn't go that far. Some people who would like to own a fun car may still have other budget constraints that will be alleviated by a car that gets decent gas mileage, especially when they have a triple-digit round-trip to make everyday.
That being said, as we've repeated already, you can't expect a 3300-pound AWD car that can do low 13s to also get 30 mpg.

I'm aware of that car... but with two fewer wheels to drive, gearing better suited for fuel economy and a few years more development, it's expected. Additionally, it's the entry-level model not intended for all-out performance, though Ford did make a very good compromise between that and fuel efficiency with more emphasis on the latter. But it's an impressive feat, no matter what.
Yeah I was kind of astonished by how good that car is on paper. Never been a ford fan. They are growing on me in recent years.
Also consider that epa estimates are never spot on. I have the window cling for my daily driver saturn listing the EPA estimate at 35, I consistently see 40+.

I just drove cross country in my evo. Fully built motor, upgraded turbo, proper tune. Stayed out of boost 99% of the time and got 25mpg. My best stretch gave me 29mpg. Theres no point however to get an evo if you want a good DD with great gas mileage.
Just to add some fuel to the discussion since the OP was intersted in the STi as well personally coming from an 08 STi I was hoping to get better MPGs despite the horror stories and I was pleasantly surprised by my new Evo X. After some stop and go and mixed freeway I averaged 20ish MPG.
On the freeway going 62 the car hits 25MPG every time all the time.
By comparison my STi averaged 18 mixing up the driving and on the freeway I felt like I could play the lotto if the car hit 24MPG because it was usually around 22.
I fault the lag and the wacky "economy" tuning of the STi for the lackluster economy. The Evo X Feels mighty in any gear and with your head on the shoulders you can get decent MPGs without resorting to a throttle tuning knob.

I think op ducked out on the 1st page.
If anyone has to worry about mpg's than this isn't the car for you obviously. If you want a car with performance than the v6 mustang is a good car: if you want a performance car than you shouldn't be worrying about mpg's.

Its funny you say that because ct9a evos are actually very good on gas considering its performance potential and drivetrain (and aero). I certainly wasn't thinking mpgs when I bought mine but hell its there, and I don't mind it. I hit 26mpg on the highway without even thinking about it, and 27 if I try to keep WOT bursts to a minimum. If you really try hard on a well tuned STI you can hit 26. But if I tried that hard in my evo I'd hit 28 or maybe 29. I was actually so mad when I rented a mazda3 last weekend for a 800mile trip. It got the same gas mileage as I would've done in my evo! Even taking into account the extra cost of premium gas I actually lost money driving that damn boring POS.
To me evos are great because they have such a big performance envelope while being reliable (if maintained), having a useable back seat and trunk, winter abilities, and DDing ability. I have 103k miles on mine and it sees the track on average 14 times a year, ferries me on weekends between cities, takes me to work, takes me fishing, carries stuff that I frequently move long distances, took my GF to the ER a couple days ago, etc. All day every day. Nothing short of a Gheybaru comes even close. I've been in literally scary snow storms that only Canadians would know about, and I'd rather be in my car than anything else. Back when I was younger and much dumber I'd drive a corolla through those storms....I survived that more thanks to luck than anything else.
Some people bought their evo purely for the 1/4mile. Some bought it as a nice weekend car. Some bought it to stance the living crap out of it. And some buy it because its the jack of all trades. Evos are not one dimensional cars, they are awesome on many fronts. So don't knock people that actually look at their mpg.
