evo buying help

hi im planning on getting an evo in a few months and i have been doing research on what i want and my options. so now im here looking for some help with you experienced people. Anyway i have been looking at a 06 evo 9 MR edition and i was talking to a buddy of mine who just got an evo 9 gsr and he told me that the MRs tranny are junk, that they ruin gears at around 350hp. i dont know if this is true or not so thats what im asking you guys. Also if i can get any advice on what to look for when buying or just any advice at all. Much appreciated

Buy one completely stock, the 5 speed is stronger than the 6 speed but theyre not junk as long as you dont go over 450lbs torque so you can keep the tranny and the tc happy.

Buy a stock one that has NEVER been modded. Try to buy it from someone who is older who took care of it.

find a stock 9, the mivec will make much more power with basic bolt ons +tune compared to the 8 which will need cams to match a stock 9's power after tune.

This.

Weak 6 speed tranny is overrated. I have 381whp/400lb/ft tq with zero tranny issues so far. Bolt ons and cams on 93oct, stock turbo.

people say buy stock blah blah

stock is harder and harder to find. personally i'd buy either stock or basic bolt-ons. just because a car was stock doesn't mean it wasn't beat on any less than a bolt-on or built car. you can tell if the turbo was swapped by the radiator being all dinged up from working in a tight space and everything else is pretty easy to spot

make sure to have a good shop inspect it; get a compression test done, look at all the tires. normal car-buying stuff

Exactly, good luck buying that "all stock" Evo. Between cars hastily returned to stock, cars running who knows what tune/map, and how the car was treated in it's lifetime, the used Evo market is a bit of a minefield. A modified car which passes compression tests and runs smooth is better then a rough running leaky compression "stock" car.

If you plan to go mod crazy, stick with the 5 spd. If you plan to keep the car completely stock or close to stock the 6 spd MR tranny should be fine.

People often want the 6 spd MR because they think it's a "faster" car for some odd reason, based on people I have spoken to that know little to nothing about Evos. I guess they assume non MR Evos are slower or have less power/mods.

Most of the guys that I know that have purchased an MR either have current tranny problems or have swapped out their tranny for a 5 spd once it blew. Food for thought.
