Should I Buy This EVO 8?

http://www.californiamotors.com/2003...-94901/3952833

I test-drove this last week and I can't stop thinking about it. It's very clean and the last owner took damn-good care of it, except for the accident on the carfax. But it was repaired with no frame/motor damage. Hell, even the paint matching is spotless.

But who cares about paint, the mods and flash make this a monster that pulls like nothing I've ever driven before.

What do you guys think about this? Too risky or what?

Thanks for your advice.

With that many mods, take it to a place that REALLY knows the Evo & have them give it a real thorough going-over before putting any money down.

Thanks.

I'll try to get a professional to check it out. What should I have the car checked for with it being so heavily modded? I would like to get it checked out at Works but that might be to far from the dealer. At the least, what should I have a mechanic be searching for on a modded car like this? Maybe the transmission, head gasket, leaks?

Also, how much do you think this car should be priced at?

With the mileage I would think 13K-15K would be reasonable. I've seen some go as cheap as $12K.

Get a mechanic that knows what to look for. If he is a good mechanic he will check compression, leakdown, look for exhaust leaks, worn belts, shaft play in the turbo, oil leaks, coolant leaks, wheel alignment, torn cv boots, play in the tie rod ends, check to ensure all the windows are on track, so and so forth.

yeah, price is too high. KBB says ~$15K, NADA ~$13.9K

Unfortunately, when it comes to car value, aftermarket parts don't really come into effect for banks and such.

I would offer them 14K out the door. No more.

The car is 10 years old with over 100K miles and has been modified. There is no telling how much was done to the car and if the last owner pulled a lot of mods off and returned it back to stock before trading it in.

What kind of warranty is the dealership going to give you?

Make sure the clutch is aftermarket, because a stock clutch on a modified car will most likely die in a short time and you will be stuck with having to pay for a replacement and labor (over $1000)

Go over every inch of that car. Make sure the hot/cold knob turns freely with no resistance. Take the VIN and call Mitsu and make sure the TSB for the HVAC gears were done and a cabin filter was installed.

Why do you specifically mention to "make sure the hot/cold know turns freely with no resistance"?

Mine has a slight resistance because it was late / I was lazy when installing my new radio, but it by no means there is something wrong with the car and I could easily fix it.

look it up, theres a whole thread about how the gears for the blend door have been updated, 2003 Evos did not come with cabin filters allowing leaves and dirt into the HVAC core.
