Good idea, bad idea, or terrible idea? (thinking of working a deal for this Evo VIII)
Good idea, bad idea, or terrible idea? (thinking of working a deal for this Evo VIII)
I found this the other day on my local craigslist postings. I have talked to the dealer a little and feel like I might be able to work a pretty good deal out. They are an exotic car dealer and I'm sure they don't want this riced out lookin evo on there lot very long. It has a rebuilt title so I'm sure I can get it much cheaper than the listing, it has only 28k miles on it, but it's been tuned and is running 21psi. On top of that you never really know what else has been messed with. I would need to change the front bumper and hood cause these ones are hideous, and I'd probably get it re-tuned cause it would be my daily driver and don't really feel safe with 21psi. I really like the IX MR Interior though. I've always dreamed of a Rally Red Evo VIII/IX and just want to make sure I go about it the right way. This car was for sale by an owner for $13k but the dealer got to it before me so now they are putting $17,950 on it. My current Lancer GTS is valued at kbb for $16500. Should I try and work a trade in or should I stay as far away from this car as possible?

"Up for sale is a 2005 Mitsubishi EVOLUTION VIII that is excellent condition. This is the Rally Sport Edition and only has 28k miles! Equipped with the MR EVO 9 Interior and tasteful modifications. This car is VERY fast. It is mechanically perfect and is extremely fun to drive. This car has a Rebuilt Title due to being stolen. It had the interior as well as hood and bumper stripped, otherwise no damage when it was recovered. Why is this potentially a great thing? Well instead of the plain RS Interior, you have a VERY comfortable and awesome looking / Expensive EVO IX MR Interior. You also have a fantastic looking and stylish front end! Not only this, but you can get the car at a fraction of what it should cost you with all these great updates. It has new tires, new rotors, new brakes. I don't know the full extent of the upgrades, but it certainly has a full exhaust, intake, tuned at 21psi of boost, and more! All this with the super low miles makes a fantastic car at a STEAL of a price.

21psi is fine for an evo
that car is an RS. no power windows, no AC, no ABS, etc.
it likely has a rebuilt title because it was stolen, which is probably the best sort of rebuilt title you could buy. the price they're asking is the price it should be with a clean title; 12-13k is the absolute highest i'd pay for that

I second that. You will find some rebuilt titles that are a little more expensive, but no way would I give $18000 for it. I have a rebuilt title 05 that's silver and it has just 40k miles and I'm realistic with what I might get whenever I sell it.
^^ This. Definitely be careful when considering salvaged/rebuilt cars, don't overpay!!!

Rebuilt/Salvage philosophy applies to all cars, not just evos. So treat this like you were buying almost any other car with a similar title. Think of the value of the car now and after you buy it. Think about how anyone would get financed for this vehicle if you ever try to sell it or think of what a dealership will (if they will at all) give you for a trade in on this vehicle. I hate to bring you down a bit about this, but in this economy, you have to plan a little bit for the future when it comes to car purchases....unless you are mister money bags.
I found out that all 05+ RS's have AC standard. I know for a fact that this car was picked up very cheap because I replied to the private sellers posting, but the dealer had already picked it up at that point. I'm hopin to talk it down to $13k or so because obviously $18k is a huge ripoff. I'm positive that my GTS is worth more than this Evo, I've just always wanted an evo and feel like this may be an opportunity to jump on. Does anyone on here from or know anyone evo owners from Bloomington Indiana by any chance?
You can offer the dealer $13-$14k. They migh say No and someone might come along later who doesn't care so much about salvage and might pick the Evo up for $15k because they think its a fair price. I think the dealer would sell it for around $14k if they have been sitting on it for awhile. If they just got it in then they might try for $16-$18 for a few months and hope they get someone dumb and desperate to purchase at that price.
Also a dealer will always rip you off on a trade-in. You don't have to accept it if you don't think its fair. But your only other option is to sell your car private party before buying a different car.

way over priced! why does it have a rebuilt title? sell you car private do not trade it in you will get a couple k less then if you sold it private! sell it then if you really want it, if it checks out then buy it but make sure you get it at a good price.
