Purchasing an Evo

Hey guys, I'm looking to be a first-time buyer of what has been my dream car since I was in middle school. I currently live in Atlanta, and have had a bit of a challenging time finding the right car. I've been looking mainly at '06-'08 and have a max budget of $21k. I plan for this to be my daily driver, but I also plan to take it out on track days a few times a year.

I guess the questions I have are as follows:

1. What should I look out for when inspecting the car? Any areas in particular that I should give great attention to?

2. Should I be looking at older models? Are there any problems that are common with them?

3. Evo VIII vs Evo IX vs Evo X? Is one generally regarded as better than the others?

4. Any other advice you would give to a first-time buyer?

Thanks for your help!

I can help you answer a few of these questions...

2. I honestly don't see any major problems with an older year compared to a newer one for that same model. Some will say for the Evo 8/9 the 6spd MR transmission is a little weaker than the 5spd counterpart. But in my opinion, that only occurs when the car is raced/tracked. The same can be said for the X MR. There are trim differences that may help you decide which one you want.

3. That is a question you're going to have to decide on yourself. Each has there own advantages/disadvantages. The Evo VIII/IX compared to the X are different but similar is their own ways.

I know this doesn't help much but you have to ask yourself this. What are your goals/purposes for the car? Are you leaning more towards straight performance, or comfort/daily pleasure? Be detailed. Then people can help suggest what is best for you.

It's best to just browse through the forums and read as much as you can.
