EVO VS STi

So new to the forum i've had 1 DSM 98 GSX before absotlutly despised it. It was fun but only 7 mpgs?! Meh.

So i've esentailly been a flat 4 fan and owned 3 in the past 2 years. But have a little girl on the way so i decided to kind of go against my friends and get an EVO X for the rear room space compared to subaru.

One othe issue is i can't medically drive stick have very bad knee issues so EVO X comes in Auto! Kinda works out

But i'd like to hear the Pros and Cons of the EVO and also some factual statements on the drivetrain over subaru's comparison wise.

Not too much on the power bands, but also from what i can see the after market is slightly cheaper than a subaru's.

If yall would be able to kind of help that'd be great. Also point me in the direction of someone who needs payments taken over on there EVO!

Well if you're wanting a X there isnt a 4g in that. It's a 4B11. I had a '02 bugeye and i personally love then car itself but I started to have too many issues with it. Love the sound of the boxer engine (w/ unequal length header) but I definitely think my evo is way more reliable than my scoob ever was. Btw, I don't understand why you're comparing the two when you wouldn't be able to drive a STi anyways since they are only 6spds. Seems like the MR is your only choice?

Sounds like you need reassurance on the TC-SST transmission.

If you read around people will tell you that they are great and can fire off lighting fast shifts especially in the Sport modes but you can still drive it like an auto if you want. Sounds like that's what you're needing.

Now if you plan on modding the car they are more complex then the 5 speed, can have heat issues if you don't properly upgrade the cooler and keep it maintain it which is an added cost of the transmission.

For everything else the EVO is great, handles better than anything subaru makes, and the engine responds better to mods and with proper maintenance is very reliable.

And that's the cliff notes on the EVO.

Yeah i know they changed up the motor just didn't know the term name for the engine. But you are correct when i comes to be limited to an AWD performance car being auto. And i wouldn't suffice for a wrx just because the 2.0L are bleh... If forced upon yes i would dirve stick if i had to choose between the 2 and my only option was manual. But i'm trying to get a broad idea of the new EVO i've heard great things about them

Not to many mods going to be done to this car gotta keep it simple a few bolt ons but ain't trying to boost my infant back into the womb. And that sounds like excatly what i'm looking for! Thank you for this

I do know this, my last gen i would purchase would be a 07'. And i hate the body style... I'm not looking for a longer front end with the same amount of rear seat space.

But how would yall compare the AWD between the 2?

I would definitely say the evo has a MUCH better response compared to my bugeye and the 2013 I test drove.

Perfect that'd be great for here in PA. FYI my fiance would occasionally drive it also... Have you driven it in snow yet?

One thing i hate about mine is the diffs aren't set to a 50/50 so 2nd subraru where it has more power sent to the rear, rather than distributed evenly

EJ257 Starting from 07. Has ringland issues and frankly seems like the quality took a cut when they decided to go (for the 08s) cross platform with the legacy. On mine the power steering pump seized because the inlet cracked and burst. They switched it to plastic instead of keeping it metal like it was.. Also some blow engines for no reason whatsoever others boost the heck out of it and they are fine. That tells me QC is not doing its job at Fuji Heavy Industries.

um... interesting analogy then the TC-SST sounds right for you

The STis AWD system is pretty neat in that it is pretty compact being housed in the tranny but also the thing grenaded on me once when the front diff failed again for whatever reason. The EVO has a much more sophisticated system where the car can do a great deal of sorting between front rear and side to side torque to get you going where you want to. Plus its smoother and it does provide for a sportier driving feel then the STi does. STi's system has a ton of "safe" understeer dialed in and feel very clunky. It's not as sophisticated as the EVOs system and frankly it feels more like a chore to drive the car.

I personally haven't driven in snow yet with this yet. Just moved back to MN from AZ so this will be the first winter with the X.

Apparently the X is by default 50/50. It will send torque to the right wheel if it needs to.

Behold!
