New EVO 9 Owner with Problems :/

Hows everybody doing?

I just purchased a Black EVO IX last friday from this guy in Miami. I have some questions plus need some advice. The car was advertised as "stock". It has 74,xxx miles. When I went for the initial test drive, he told me that it idled hard with the a/c but that was the only issue. On my way back to Orlando the CEL came on then I pulled over to fill up. After filling up the car gave issues starting. Then when I finally got it to start it idled hard then stalled . Finally got it going and got home. Every morning since then it has done the same thing (idled hard then stalled if i touch the a/c or steering wheel. I cleaned the throttle plate and tried resetting the ecu by unplugging the battery terminals. Still hasnt helped. My dads friend checked it and said my EVAP Purge Solenoid is bad. My boy who has an evo who is actually on here said it could be the EGR valve. Here's a list of the codes my scan tool found

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
P0171 - System Too Lean
P0441 - Evap Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0506 - Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected

I feel like its been tuned and was TRIED to be converted back to stock unsuccessfully. Was planning on taking it to a shop to pinpoint the cause and see if it was tuned before. Just wanted some advice to see what I should do or if im already going down the right route

That sounds like the seller was playing the lying game there - too bad. Hope you get things sorted out.

Yea it sounds like there's something he did not tell you. Unfortunately that happens a lot where cars are turned back to stock before being sold. Not saying that's the case with yours, but until you have an experienced mechanic look at it, or someone who specializes in Evos you won't know.

Don't let this get you down though, we've all had to overcome some ****ty obstacles with our cars at one point or another. Good luck with the car man, hope it all works out for you.

What year Evo is it? Could be some normal wear and tear or the seller could've been a dbag.

My guesses:

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Test pipe without an extended bung for O2 -- or jacked up O2 wiring)
P0171 - System Too Lean (Could be related to the above.)
P0441 - Evap Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow (Possibly need new charcoal canister)
P0506 - Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected (Maybe a vacuum leak -- could be a stuck IAC sensor. If I remember, those critters are plunger like in nature)

Regardless...Good luck.

Sounds like it was modded and tuned, then returned to stock and not retuned.

Check for: test pipe, egr delete (under driverside rear bumper), wear on nuts and bolts typical with bolt-ons

Hope you get it sorted out... nothing worse than sellers advertising about how clean and stock their car is. Then come to find out it was modded and returned to stock

Its a 06'. You're right it could be normal wear. The tech I took it to said I need a evap purge solenoid. Its weird because the two times I've filled the tank it wouldn't start at first. Had to keep cranking it. Im thinking about deleting the cat all together. Just throwing out ideas. Could the incorrect purge flow code cause the system too lean as well?

Yea thats what I'm thinking too. The guy still says he didnt do anything to it. I feel like I already bought the car if your were lying to me to sell it then ok. But now I have it and Im trying to fix it tell me whats really going on with it

bring it to a reputable evo tuner or shop and have them take a look. have them log your car and i am sure they can tell you exactly what happened. to me, it sounds like stock parts put back on without a retune.

Needs a retune. Thing has a tune for aftermarket parts that he just removed.

Bring it to a REPUTED tuner and get it re-tuned.

In the meantime, make sure the MAF is clean and check for boost leaks on the intercooler couplers and piping. Check the vac lines as well, particularly the EGR line (see pic) which is behind and below the throttle body. I think its the green (maybe yellow) stripped line.
