Question about evo's

I'm a noob yes Sorry, I have no idea where to post this so I came here.. please dont knock me for it.

Ive left playing around with honda's and ive been shopping for an evo the past 6 months

Ive come across some good deals and I lost it being the fact my stupid lawyer wouldnt settle my case for a car accident I was in. Anyway.

Recently I found one deal where its a rebuilt title with about 94k on the car
Previously was in a rear fender bender thats why rebuilt title.

Questions I want to know is

Is it worth it to buy a rebuilt evo?
What are signs of things I should look into?
What are red flags for bad buys?

I think the car was a 04. Body is in decent condition for its age.
The transmission I think needs a rebuild.

Any helpers? :helpm e:

what's the price. anything other than a clean title should be well discounted no matter what they say the damage was.

The guy i think wanted 15k...i offered 12 as of right now...but I dont think a rebuilt evo would be worth that much either...

15 would be about right for a GOOD condition clean title car. If you are serious about it take it to a shop that specializes in evos (if possible) and have them inspect it. Price out how much all the repairs and maintenance would cost then knock that off the price. otherwise I would avoid it because it will be more of a headache than its worth.

@ escodotcarter should i be using kbb prices to work on the prices with private parties?

I'm seeing car's with like 162k going for almost 17k stock...and then kbb is saying the car is worth only about 9.5k?

Thats where im starting to get confused on...

Those guys are dreaming if they think there getting that kind of money for a high mileage car. Keep looking and be patient you will find something good, for $17 k you would find a nice example with decent miles.

The market has a lot to do with it. In pre-cuba south Florida, 8's regularly sell for 16-19k with high miles if they are in average or better condition. They pop up for 12-14k every once in a while, but they are normally gone in a day or two. Beyond that, anything below 15k here always has a significant history (wrong color, salvage title, engine not running, etc).
That is why I buy them at auction, the savings are huge even after shipping and most unexpected repairs as well.
KBB is not a good indication of much of anything. Even using a reliable price guide like Black Book USA only applies to non-specialty cars. You can use it to price out your Corolla or Mustang but expecting a realistic value on an Evo or a Corvette or any other niche vehicle is wishful thinking at best.

It's all about the market.... the opposite in value is true here for motorcycles. A bike that would pull $8000 in New England in spring will get $3500-4500 year round down here.

But on main topic.... for $15000 and needing a transmission that is too much for having a salvage title too. Even down here a 100k 04 with a bad tranny would be in the 13-15k range with a clean title. Down here I would call $12k a reasonable offer if the tranny was okay and it just had a salvage title (and nothing outwardly wrong with it on basic inspection).

people will always pay more for a clean "truly stock" car. use kbb just as a reference to see if you are in the ballpark. Check out the car for sale section on here and see what people are asking/getting.

1. The market determines a fair price.
2. Any Evo with a salvage title, and a transmission needing to be re-built should be VERY cheap.
3. Regarding price... KBB doesn't really have a good handle on these vehicles. They're currently bridging the gap between "am I going to be a collectible car" and "am I still just a regular sports car". They're getting much more rare, albeit the 8's aren't really leading the charge on that because they were sold from 03-05.

I think to honestly answer your questions, you need to tell us why you want the car. A salvaged Evo with a tranny issue is a great buy for someone who wants a race car, or desires having some particular custom work done, but if you want a reliable DD, I'd keep looking. In fact, if you want a reliable DD, I'd probably leave homologation cars alone altogether!

Well I want an evo to hit the track maybe about 2-3 times a year for the hell of it, other than that it'll be a weekendish car..I wont be driving it that often. I dont mind putting work in a car...I like working on car's so I guess that's why I was looking towards this deal. I definitely will be doing light mods on the car though.

Kbb is crap now that i noticed it with comparing evo prices. lol
I guess cars down south or out west are better finding to buy for the right price.

I bought my garage kept, original owner, near perfect condition '03 VIII with 66k miles for just over $16k a month ago. I'd suggest looking down south, too. Coming from NY this is the first car I've ever owned where PB Blaster wasn't required and it is amazing.
