Evo 8 or Evo 8 MR
People complain about the MR's so much. Anything can break if you beat the **** out of it and/or start throwing mods at it. With that said, I have an MR and I absolutely love it. I know a lot of people say the trannys are junk, but to each his own. I don't baby the car by any means, and everything is fine on my car. If you feel you want the MR, get the MR.
Let me cut to the chase for you, regardless of what "ANY" of us say you'll be the one making those car payments and that decision. I owned an 8 and I loved it to pieces literally but I was impressed with the MR's interior. Each vehicle has it's pros and cons, yes the non-MR's are going to be better tranny wise. Yet power wise the MR is best, of course since Mitsubishi improved over time making these vehicles.
So map out what's important to you besides modding, cruise control, interior, gauges OEM or aftermarket, and etc. All that stuff comes into play and then stick to your guts regardless of the pain going through the car with modding. Modding anything will be a headache my man so hope this helps

Wait SE... aren't we talking about the VIII (GSR, RS, SSL & MR)?
The MR, which came with a revised limited-slip front differential, aluminum MR shift knob, handbrake with carbon fiber handle, 17 inch BBS wheels, aluminum roof, and a 6-speed manual gearbox. The new Evolution also sported chrome housing tail lights and head lights and Bilstein shocks for improved handling. The aluminium roof panel and other reductions in body weight have lowered the centre of gravity to produce more natural roll characteristics. Detail improvements have also been made to Mitsubishi’s own electronic four-wheel drive, to the ACD 5 + Super AYC 6 traction control, and to the Sports ABS system.
The GRS(grey Enkei wheels, Brembo Brakes and sunroof), RS(aluminum roof, 5-speed gearbox, and standard wheels) & SSL (a sunroof, trunk mounted subwoofer, and leather seats) so to each their own variant of asthetics. Basically you decide what you want man.
