new to evo world

hey guys i have recently just brought myself an EVO VIII with 75,000kms, as far as i am aware the only mod on this car is a cat back exaust, and a turbo timer somewhere hidden an i have no idea where it is but it only leaves the car running for 2 mins after i have been boosting it, when i have been gentle with it it will just turn off when i turn the ignition off... ill get the auto elec to sort it as this isnt my problem...
when the car is cold or just in the right gear an revs (approx 3000rpm-4200rpm) when the car makes its peak boost sometimes it has a nasty fuel/engine cut, i have read up on this an apparently it is due to overboosting (spiking) and the EVO must have some sort of boost cut.
I am looking at getting it tuned to its peak performance with just a tune to suit the exaust, ( fuel pump to maybe)? , looking for approx 200kw atw nothing to crazy as i still want good fuel economy on the highway, if i were to get it tuned by a performance machanic in my area who i have used before on previous cars and is well known as a great tuner, will this make that sort of power, fix the problem, and give me a reliable car to drive. I appreciate this!
he also says get all the oils, plugs and filters done before turning up ( as i can do this myself ) if you could assist me in which oils to use etc i would appreciate it,
also cold air intake or just a replacement filter insert will do the trick??
i am located in sydney...
cheers guys
chris

If you are somewhat near stock, the factory intake will be fine. Although you can do a drop-in K&N filter or get a maf adapter and open element cone filter for fun. Fuel pump would be nice but probably not necessary if all you have is an exhaust. Typically when you go for a tune, you try to squeeze as many mods in as possible (within reason) that will net you the biggest gains. This will help you out a lot.

Along with the basic maintenance stuff, before you go in for a tune, do a boost leak test. You can find testers on ebay for $20-30. Leaks will easily rob you of potential horsepower.

You will get a million different responses about what oil to use. Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil Valvoline, Shell Rotella are all excellent brands. As for oil filters; Stay away from Fram, Bosch and OEM filters. Royal Purple makes a good one without breaking the bank. On a budget Purolator seems to filter nicely but overall quality reflects it's price.

They probably stuck the turbo timer under the dash somewhere. Just looking up what they look like and go rummaging around behind the dash.

Just make sure your car is all buttoned up and running smoothly. You're tuner can help you with any problems you have but if you are going in for a tune, he probably is only planning to run your car on the dyno, no really diagnosis car issues.

oh great i appreciate that heaps,
yeah my tuner has a 4wd dyno so he will do a couple of runs i guess...
yeah i have to find that turbo timer as my machanic wants to know where it is incase he has to shut the car dwn, if it were to get stuck doing 9000rpm or what have you.

check your hoses they might be causing the fuel cut, mine had the same nasty cut and find out a hose wasnt plugged.
also check your fuel pump it could be causing it, had another boost cut and it was my oem fuel pump failing.

so i found the turbo timer.... built into the alarm ( mongoose M80 ) good idea but a pain in the *** to turn off on etc, you have to have the reds on an arm then dearm the alarm an yeah... so i will be turning it off as it is only set to 1.5 mins or off... an i will be installing an aftermarket one anyone recomend one.. just looking for a cheapish affective one i can turn on an off easily an set to a custom time.. apexi pen type or hks or whatever
cheers

Welcome! Does it have a downpipe at all? That might cause the boost spike as well.
