New 2014 black pearl GSR
Guys,
I'm stoked!! I got a 2014 evo x a few weeks ago. Man I can't wait to give it a solid drive. It only had 27 miles and it's now at 56. I'm glad to finally be part of the evo group after all these years of dreams. I had a few questions for you guys which im sure has been covered but wanted to hear some personal reviews.
-What is the best way to break in the engine? I know it said for 500 miles on the owner manual not to pass 5k rpm. I also read on here to NOT keep speed constant but to gas it a bit then let off.
-Also, what is the recommended first oil change time? I've seen some people say 500 miles, and on the owners manual it says at 3000 miles. Should I worry about any metal particulates during break in?
-Also been calling a bunch of oil filter companies to find out micron ratings. I think that I'm either going with amsoil or purolator pureone. I think both are rated at 20 microns. What do you guys think are the best?
Thanks for all the help....

I changed my oil almost right away. The Evo (most likely) comes with conventional oil from the factory. So if you are wanting synthetic, you may think about changing it out sooner than later.
When I bought my second Evo I bought it out of town and had to drive mostly highway to get back home. I tried to speed up and slow down as much as I could, but wish I could have done it more.
My first evo it was easy to fluctuate the rpm's because of almost all city driving. I just slowly increased the max rpm's as the miles climbed.
Congrats on the Evo by the way!!!

Congrats on the Evo! I just hit 3k miles on mine and got my first oil change. It's true it comes with conventional oil from the factory.
I doubt Mitsubishi would put all of their engineering into the engine and turbo and then ship it off with an oil that will not meet performance expectations....BUT I'm not an engineer so I have no idea if synthetic is going to make our engines perform better than conventional oil.
EDIT: Get Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic if you have a US model. Your dealer will try to BS you about "your car nio longer requires synthetic oil..." just tell him to STFU and put in Mobil 1 synthetic and you'll pay the difference.
I recall that RIGHT after my car left the dealer with the conventional oil change, I was sitting in traffic and my engine completely shut off. Freaked me the hell out but I just put two and two together and will be getting this gunk out of my car ASAP.

I believe in the many discussion about the oil, it has been said it's just regular conventional, nothing special to it. Not sure why they changed it up. The most common thought is to save money.
This is good news. Conventional is better for break in. Run it hard for the first 20 miles and youre done with the engine break in. Change oil to synthetic. Done.
Note I didnt say shift hard, launch, or brake hard. Redline each gear but don't shift, let the engine slow the vehicle back down in the same gear. Repeat in each gear up to 4th. Change oil and filter.

But I have to wonder, if conventional oil is better for break in, does that mean the 2008-2011 Evo's didn't have as good of a break in?

I need to double check my manual. I don't believe it makes any mention to mobile 1 synthetic. It just makes mention that synthetic is recommend for optimal performance. Again I will have to check. But I would assume that for the 2008-2011's, mobile 1 synthetic is recommended because they put that sticker on their engine block. Their manual may make mention to mobile 1 synthetic as well.

Personally I would have drove straight home from the dealer and changed it haha. Althought I am a bit excessive with my oil changes.
I had always used Rotella T6 with a WIX oil filter-especailly in the winter
I am getting ready to do my second oil change on my built motor right now and there is quite a discussion going on with what oil I should use.

goglo13 kindly spent his time and money to test which filters were the most effective. After taking a look at the results, I've been using the Amsoil EA15K20 filter.
As for motor oil, I've been using Mobil 1 5w30 every single oil change. I've once gone 7,000 miles between oil changes, and the Blackstone Labs oil analysis came back clean. I was told I could have gone another 2,000 miles on that oil. I will note that I haven't done any major power mods.

Guys thanks for all the responses. Yah I was in school for 4.5 years in chem. eng. and finally got out and have worked for a year. But now im broke as crap hahah, need to start saving money for mods. First things first a nice tint and then we'll see where it goes. I already have a two page word doc of mods in order from looking at this site and several others. yes ajloo, but files are super large, I made a massive video of inside and out. When I have some more time I'll try to scale down and attach, sorry super busy right now with work.
-Here's a list of mods I'm thinking about, of course this is super amateur. I'm still planning to take a good hard look at every single decision and component. Let me know if you guys advise against or agree with.
