Getting all-wheel drive in a OZ rally
Getting all-wheel drive in a OZ rally
Hey i'm new here. I decided to register for the forums, because I plan on doing some serious upgrading on my OZ Rally, now that i'm looking for a job (things are looking good, i should be working in about 2 weeks). I'm 17, have an 03 OZ Rally and plan on putting all my money towards my car for about the next year. One thing i'm really wondering is if it is possible and how costly it would be to get all wheel drive in my OZ. I plan on doing many upgrades to my OZ to make it capable of keeping up with the EVO's with there 270 horse. I am gunna do everything, turbo, exhaust, NOS, intake...everything. Do any of you think it would be worth it to have all wheel drive? I plan on getting 250+ horse into my OZ before i'm done, and I am just asking if having all wheel drive would help me a lot with traction (like off the start and bursting out of corners). Cause I know now with my front wheel drive and only 130 hp I am still burnin rubber sometimes when shifting to 3rd if it is on a corner or in the least bit slick out, so I can't really imagine the loss of traction with 250 hp...Anyway thanks for the advice before hand.

^ if he has the money then why not?...yeah but you should have just bought yourdself an evo...though with the RRM stage 2 done you can get to evo number on a 1/4 for about 5k....as for all wheel drive....good luck with that though people would like to see it done
If I could have afforded an EVO I would have got one...basically this is wut my situation is. I used to race motorcross, till i got my license. Then I sold my dirt bike for a truck, which i traded for a blazer, then i traded for my lancer. Now my dad refuses to let me trade for an evo even if i can afford the payments on it with my job until i have paid off my lancer, and it is in my name...the reality is I can't get an evo, but I can upgrade my car as much as i please. So that is wut i'm gunna do, it will be fun to see my car change anyway. It's no fun to by a car you can't really do anything to because it is already so kick ***. So please no more posts on just get an evo, because if I could I would, but i can't, I don't have that extra 10 grand just in my back pocket at the moment, but I can slowly get it and use it to upgrade my car, then people will be asking is that an evo, and i will say no it's an OZ, but it will be fun when i race an evo with an OZ and win...haha
Ya exactly if I have the money why not, the reality is my dad pays for my gas, right now anyway, so I will be putting away 500 bucks a month or more. This summer I turn 18 and will be able to work a lot more, so money will just be rolling in, and my dad has no problem with me saving all of it for my car, he will still give me money here and there. Basically i'm spoiled rotten i admit it, and it is so true, but not quite spoiled enough to have my dad by me a brand new evo, so an OZ will have to do. I just want to know if it is possible to put all wheel drive in it, and if it would be worth it, or do you think my car could handle an evo's power without it? I don't want to be racing around a corner hit the gas to keep up with an impreza the has all wheel drive then lose my traction andd wreck my car...I kinda have a grudge with a guy with an impreza cause he think i wasted my money even though he spent 24 grand for 220 hp, instead of getting an evo, and after 5 grand my car can be putting out 250+ hp.
Ya well I plan on doing it only if it will make a helpfull difference to my handling, and my traction in the first few gears. I'm assuming it will, but I want others opinions.

Dude, I'm 17 too... But the difference is, I'm freaking rediculously poor. Heck I'm canadian too... eh.
By meaning "All wheel Drive" your probably not intending to make your 120 don doggy run all 4 wheels right? Because you'll probably have more Drive train loss than you actually pack Horsepower.
Your probably like ever other lancer owner out there, dreaming about dropping in the Evo's 4G63 engine into our chaisis.
Well **** everyone. its possible. Hard, and not something the avg 17 year old has pateince for, but possible and semi costly i guess. It all depends on how much you want to do yourself.
Now buy the engine. you can get it for anywhere between 2g-10g... depends on the engine package. (with wires, and mojo like that)
With this engine, see if it fits into your car, i think it'll fit in our engine bay without too much of a problem, but I'm not too sure, just check before you spend some real money down the road.
Now thats the easy stuff.
Now strip your entire car to its frame.
Then mod your frame a bit to make tunnels for all your junk.
Thats not a weekend job... (If your wondering)
Anyways, next you need a new transmission. Lots of LSD's. heh lsd... (Limited Slip Diff.) And a really really strong gearbox. Get a short gear ratio so your acceleration times will be rediculous! Top ending scares the ladies, but the acceleration makes them excited!
Now get a few women. (they come in handy later)
Anyways, you need a new... "everything". Because the stock stuff are actually rediculously heavy. Weight is the enemy.
Get Carbon fiber everything (Hood, and if your lucky panels). Whatever you cant get carbon fiber for, get in Re-enforced Alliminuim. Then alliuminum. then steel, i guess.
Now tack all your junk to the frame, and wield it properly. Oh yea find a place for your gas tank too, it won't fit with the drivetrain in place, I don't think it would atleast.
Now you need some performance brakes... Brembo is good, but can cost you anywhere to like 10 grand for a brake kit. I say steal a porche's brakes and mod it to fit your car, but being that neither of us knows how to do it, spend the shinney penny.
Now you need suspension, and all the crap with it. Shocks is good, sway bars, springs, and structs. All this stuff can be kinda rediculously expensive... So beware. Anyways Evo owners like TIEN shocks (or is it springs... or both?), but Ebache is good to. I'm not even telling you the price of all the junk here.
Now you need wheels, Mitsu went cheap here and got all the evo owners 150$ rims.... So I guess the rims is the cheapest thing of the entire operation (who knew?). But personally I'll get WORK wheels, just because they weigh nothing, and they kick ***!
Hmm.. what else am I missing? Oh yea... electronics. I'm clueless here. Don't bother.
Now the way everything is poitioned out, you should notice that your tyres actually extrude out of the body. Or thats the way my schematic says the tyres would. Anyways, that kind of junk is illigeal in canada, so you need wide arches, they should come with some bodykits. Body kits range from anywhere from 1000-10 000.
Now you gotta paint it all.
Now for the interior!... you know what you have to do here (probably)... So have fun.
Get some new exterior styling (neons, and flames or whatever), and some Xeons.
Now I'm probably forgeting alot of stuff here, or I'm completly wrong on a few things (I had 7 cups of coffee today, so I'm a tad hyper.. But my goal i think is complete... My goal being that this is alot of work and should be a project ment for a WRC team.)
But I think with all that junk said and done, now pack your ride with the ladies... and hope the car starts.

Sry I didn't proof read it... or spell check it... Or even think about half the junk I said. But anyways the point still stands! Its crazy.
But if it somehow works... Try not to kill your self, because the speed you'll feel comming out of that thing would be rediculous.
270 hp engine powering a 2000lb car (if everything lightened it'll be around this i guess). Thats called being rediculous... You'll have 0-60 times in the 2's.
Say goodbye ferrari, and hello death.

Do you have the time, effort, money, and practicality of achieving such feat? Being this young, your OZ won't be driven for two years since it's constantly under construction.
For AWD, you'll need to cut an underbody tunnel for the driveshaft. Takes tons of time and effort. You should have gotten a 3 or 4g Mirage to even match the money/power to be worthwhile.

First off, your biting off more than you can chew. From your first post, Im sorry but it seems like your knowledge of cars is lacking. (this isnt a bad thing, your probably a younger person) Case in point, you are losing traction in 3rd around a corner because the Lancer has an open diff, it has little to do with the power, or there lack of the car has. Also, you mention NOS and a turbo, seems like you just have a laundry list of the common add-ons mentioned in movies and crappy Ricer shows.
NOS is a no-no on the Lancer, the fuel managment system cannot handle it and the land rings on the pistons are a joke. Turbo charging has proven to be successful, but only with boost levels at a reasonable setting. If you want 250+ hp, your talking new internals on the engine first.
My advice to you would be to learn as much as possible before diving into such an extreme project. Can it be done? With a big bank accoutn, anything can be done. That doesnt mean its the best idea in the world. FOr this project though, not even counting the awd, you spend alot more than 5 grand to get 250+ hp reliably from your Lancer.....

Take the extra 500 per month on save it while yourt paying off that lancer. Then trade it in on an EVO. That would be your best bet.
More than likely youll be able to pick up a used EVO for 20k -24k by that time and there will be plenty of surplus after martket parts comming up on parts trader.

"The lancer can't match the 2000 lb weight, even if you tub it out. The lancer must lose over 700lbs . . . "
i dunno how to quote properly on these forums... But I figured if you made everything lightend you'll probably trim off atleast 700 lbs.
Think about it, seats alone weigh alot, and the rims aren't the lightest things I've seen.
making all the panels aluminum (I'm guessing their steel, because they rust pretty easily), would trim off alot of pounds. Heck even replacing the gass tank to something lighter would be really benifitical too. Plus an aftermarket exhaust can save a few more lbs.
I just guessed around 700lb's would be lost. I can't really see how its so impossible for the car to loose weight. I dunno, I'm poor so I feel instead of spending money on mondo hp, I'll spend it on making it lighter. But if making it lighter is so hard, then is hp the only way to go?
