Thinking of moving from AMG to Evo

I am currently driving a C43 AMG, and thinking of trading my car in for an Evo. Are there any Evo owners on this board who has experience with both cars, or have made the switch? Did anyone regret the decision?

I will miss the luxury and interior of my C43, but looking for something sportier with better handling. I had a ride in the Evo a few weeks ago, and while the car was fast, I felt that my C43 has a lot more torque and will probably have an advantage from a roll-on.

Another grip I have about the Evo is the horror stories I have heard about the reliabilty, service and warranty claims (ie, clutch). Is this really an issue?

Also, I haven't heard anyone comment on the exhuast sound of the Evo. How does it compare to the STi, another car that I am thinking about.

If I get the Evo, mostly likely I will go with Vishnu's stage 1.

Thanks,
Baron

If you go with the Vishnu Stage 1 or 1+ you will see a dramatic change in the torque figures. A 1+ with the XFlash will give you a tremendous torque hump in the mid-range, around 100 ft. lbs. difference. I will know more tomorrow after the Texas Vishnu Dyno Day!!!

Hey Baron,

I'm in the bay area, if you need some advice shoot me an email or pm me.

I've driven all those cars, and I have an evo.

I am not to familiar with the C43. But for me I usually like AMG branded cars. I drive my father's S55 and I would drop my evolution in a dime for that car. I think you could perform a lot more horse power for cheaper with the evolution, but then you lose a lot of the style. Evolution is born to be rough, luxury is not involved with the evo'style. Plus Mitsubishi Dealerships have so far been around 50/50 unsatisfactory. I think the AMG's are 20x more reliable just for reasons of that if there is an issue its taken care correctly. Plus Mitsubishi cuts corners on prices to keep price down. But the evolution if not for some reason having some chronic issue, will last a small nuclear explosion. I have tested this my backyard. If you are looking something with more edge I would route you to evolution, but only if you plan to take it to the aftermarket stages. The one thing I noticed on AMG's are they are torquey(sp?) as crap. I know an evolution can produce the same and I have a lot of feeling its the way all the electronical mumbo jumbo reacts to each other. But hey its still f'in fun to make the tires pop a squeak in stop and go. I really don't know if this helped out at all since I just reread part of it. But hey, at least 10 minutes of my work time has passed.

When comes to sound of an exhaust EVO sounds deep while driving at normal speeds, more roar sound when you hit the gas pedal and hear the turbo spools :-) hard to explain, STI is louder with exhaust and you get more ROAR sweet sound i love that sound. but i prefer evo its more quiet less tickets? :-)

I have a c32 as my daily driver, and I would not take on the Evo in its place. The Evo is a great car for fun, but it doesn't really compare for daily duty---taking clients out, rush hour traffic, etc. I guess it also depends on what you need from your daily driver. If I was still in school I guess it wouldn't matter...but then I couldn't afford it

Keep the AMG than buy an EVO. My girlfriend's dad owns an SL55 AMG, that thing is f**king fast! I can drive that thing all day long but with my EVO I wouldn't want too.

I think the Evo was really meant to be on the track. If that's where you want to ultimately end up, then the Evo is the right choice. I'm probably going to convert mine to track car when the Skyline comes out.

As for the horror stories, what can I say. A high-performance car will manifest its flaws faster than normal cars. Mitsubishi isn't the best customer oriented company. But that's the price for an awesome car for mere ~30k.

i cant say which car to get as i have never driven an AMG. But I can tell you this. As far as the warrenty and reliabilty goes, the Evolution is HIGH QUALITY. It has a few minor issues as its a first year car. But it all depends on your dealership and how you treat them. Personally at my dealership , ive had the BEST experience. I have taken my car in for all the minor warrenty stuff like the minor rust on the bumper, they fixed it, the wire harness possible leak, they fixed it, and right now its there cuz the 5th gear had a slight grinding issue when reving high and putting it in 5th. They have taken care of all these things quickly and they have been very polite about it. My car has lots of mods and they give me advise on the mods. They dont care or try and avoid warrenty issues because of them. They even gave me a free rental car even though im only 19 yrs old. ANd they keep giving me free oil changes with those jd power and associates surveys. Treat your dealer nicely and they will return the favor.

I own an Evo and I work as a tech at Mercedes so I drive AMG cars everyday. To chose between the two, you have to decide what you want out of the car. If you want a car that you can mod a lot and work on easily yourself and spend a lot less on then you should go with the Evo. If you want a car that is built with close to perfection and therefore less need to mod, better to drive other people around in, and probably get better warranty service but costs a lot more then you should go with AMG.

I would not worry about the reliability to much from reading over the forums good. I'm a very new first time Evo owner myself. On the other hand I watched my x girlfriend take her C280 to the Mercedes dealer every month. I told her to unload the thing after taking her there to look at it. I have heard stories from other MB owners as well. Mercedes / AMG make great cars although you need to be ready to pay to keep them running unless your 70 years old. They have great service and nice to work with though, anyway.
