Question from 2003: What is the best turbo for the Evo 7 8 9?
Hey guys,
I'm new here... I have had my
Evo for almost two years now. I’m considering upgrading from my JB FP Green turbo. I just need 450-500hp . I’m looking for a turbo that spools quickly and can give me that power and great for daily commute.
My current setup is:
2.0 Built Motor
Wiseco Pistons 9.0:1
850cc Injectors
Manley Rods
ACL Bearing
ARP Head Studs
Manley Spring and Retainers
Kelford 272 Cams
AEM Cam Gears
Fluid Damper
DC Sports Tubular Manifold
Full 3” Exhaust Magnaflow System
Skunk2 68mm Throttle Body
AEM ECU
XS Power Aftermarket Intercooler
K&N High Airflow Intake System
Any information is welcomed. I'm looking at the FP Black MAP EF4 and GTX3076R... if there are better options feel free to assist. Thanks guys.:thumb up:

Is going to be very tough to reach your power targets on 90 octane!
You can reach 450whp with the turbo you currently have if you switch to e85.
I'd go to 1100cc injectors minimum.
A 3BK with e85 should easily reach 450whp.... might get 400-425 on 90 octane.
Honestly, before you spend any money, I'd contact Tom for an e-tune to see what he can do for you.

I would stick with that you have. The FP Green spools pretty quick to begin with, all the other choices you mentioned will have significant more lag. If 90 octane is all you're limited by then you stuck between a rock and a hard place so to speak. The FP Green you currently have will have quick spool and generate that "uuuumph" you say you want, but it won't get you to 450-500whp. Going bigger to a FP a Black, MAP EF4, or any of the Garrett or Precision offerings will get you to meet your 450-500whp goal but will not have the "uuuumph" factor as much as the green does. Like I said earlier just stick with what you have. Quick spool and torque is more fun on the street.
I would think you could get there with the green however as stated before that 90 octane is holding you back. How much psi are your running? What fuel pump do you have? With bigger injectors and a good fuel pump setup you may be able to make more power. What do you make now? You may need meth if you cannot find a better fuel solution to make that power. Most people in the US run 93 octane or E85, both of which are much better than your 90 octane.

i've been running a MAP ef2.5 and love it.
or, according to a guy here in my town, you can make 450whp on e85 and a stock IX turbo. .....
