Went Shopping for a STI...

But I fell in love with an Evo instead. There is a local dealer here who is selling a beautiful 06 MR with tasteful mods (full titanium exhaust, intake, gauges, headers, downpipe, BOV, etc) and 84k miles. I really like the car, but I'm not too familiar with them and don't know how well the engines are built. So my questions are:

Do Evos generally have good motors? As in, if I don't beat on the car, put the best synthetic oil in it, and babied it, would the car last for a long time?

Is 23k for a very well maintained, lightly modded Evo MR with 84k miles a good price?

Would the 6 speed MR trans be better for DD?

What are some things I should look out for in the car?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.
I'm familiar with both cars, the different motors, the suspension, etc but I don't have any experience with these cars what so ever. I never knew anybody that owned an Evo or STI so I come to the internet for help.

The motor is the best part about the car. Lots of people on here make 500hp or close to it on a stock motor with just cams. Don't worry about the engine until you are looking to make big power.

That price seems fair. These cars are getting harder and harder to find especially a 9 MR.

I have owned 2 5speeds and love them. Some like the six, better for highway. Again though if you want to make big power most people switch to the stronger 5 speed.

Things to look out for you need to read this https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...oking-evo.html

In my opinion in an average weekend that i drive my car I see about 10-20 STI's while driving. I would say once a month I see an evo. I like that they are more rare. They are cheaper to make big power if thats what you are going for eventually. You do not have to pull the motor to do cams, turbo swaps are easy etc. Most people like the STI interior over the evo but thats it. Evo is much better in my book.

Sounds like a good find. With proper maintenance someone has already put over 300K miles one of these.

I'd say the price from a dealer is fair, the mileages are decent.

The very first thing I would do to that car is replace every fluid to be sure its up on maintenance.
Brake fluid
Engine oil
Trans oil
Transfercase oil
Rear diff oil
blinker oil

... ok, that last one I made up.
These are good engines, they can last if they are taken care of.
I rarely see Evo's, I see dozens of STi's, both are good cars but I've known far more STi motors blow than Evo's lol

Fair price, especially from a Dealer for an MR. I know the only fault with the MR is that some have complained that the six speed transmission is less durable than the 5 speed. But, for daily driving, it's better. Especially on the highway. In my 5 speed, I'm over 4k rpm going 75ish.

Also 06 is the best year to go with, IMO. The Evo 9 is going to be one of the most saught after of the family since it was only produced for a year and a half

I'd suggest asking the dealer to do a compression test in front of you and report back with the numbers. This will ensure the engine is healthy and not on its last leg. Mileage is nice but you dont know if it was beat to **** for those 80k miles. If the compression is decent you should have a good car for years to come without any major engine repair.

Also ensure there is no death wine or anything with the tcase while driving. That gets expensive fast as well.

Good Luck.

It's at a legit Subaru dealership that has made it it's thing to sell Evo's and STi's. I asked about the compression of the engine and they told me that the motor is 100% fine, and that the guy who traded it also gave them all the maintenance receipts. I'm going to go take a look at it again...hopefully it's still there.

I would like to mention, because he is not familiar with Evo's, the stock drivetrain is kinda loud. It does whine stock, listen closely.... but the death whine is very loud, especially outside the car. Mine sounded like a firetruck

Maybe not forever but it will seem like it. Why would you buy a sports car and not have fun with it?
