Might go look at this 9, but not sure what to think of the guy?!

Hello everyone, I currently drive and 05 Sti but looking to move over to other side!

I don't really know much Evo's but I've been doing my research.

Anyways, I found a pretty clean Evo 9 on CL. Its an 06 WW(Best color ) 48k original miles with little mods! It only has a Greddy bov and a TBE! Also going for lower than most Evo's on the market atm!

Anyways, I asked the guy a few questions like you normally do buying a car and it turns out he has no tune on it. Not even an AP tune.

I'm not sure how Evo engines react to certain mods I know for sure You need a tune for a tbe and a bov or the Ej doesn't react to well

He didn't know what a downpipe was and didn't know the brand of the exhaust, which is fine since my STI came with a unnamed catback too.

Honestly as clean as it looks the guy doesn't really seem to be knowledgeable about what he is doing too his car which I suppose is a bit scary.

What do you guys think? It looks clean and unmolested but I don't want to drive a few hours away for it not to run right due to the mods!

Also, another question is how do these cars react too these mods without a tune? Is an aftermarket bov and a catless exhaust harmful to these cars without a proper tune?

I know they are solid engines but I guess thats why im in the newbie forums

All input is appreciated!!

You should be fine without a tune, but it is recommend for max gain. Some evos for some reason are able to drive fine even with the BOV vented. If anything its probably running a little rich.

Overall you should be fine, just make sure the clutch is good and there isn't any whining coming from the diffs and transfer case and should be good to go. I know on the subarus you need to get a tune for everything, and they won't run right even with just a cone air filter.

evo with a bov without a tune is not safe, runs pig rich, therefore you'll loose power with that setup, however, the owner might simply be uneducted, if the rest of the car checks out (compression check starting etc) pull the trigger on it and get a stock nice metal bov.

It's worth a look, you seem to know how to pick a damaged motor so go along and see what condition it's in, say you want a comp test before you go

Thanks for the help guys, I will for sure go and look at it as the drive isn't that bad (2 hours) and I'll ask for a compression test before I head up there.

I did read through the forums on what to look for when buying a used evo such as frigged up radiator fans. Is there anything else I should look for besides the obvious? Especially considering this guy might not be knowledgeable about his own machine?

Also, I will be changing it back to the stock bov if I do end up pulling the trigger, but, will it run fine catless without a tune? Or is it one of those things I should put back to stock asap as well? I don't know much about tuning these vehicles as well as I don't believe they have typical AP tunes like Subarus can get. I'm doing my reading when I can!

Thanks! all input is appreciated!

A cat-back exhaust shouldn't remove the cat from the system, that would be in the mid-pipe section. If it's just a cat-back exhaust and still has the OEM catalytic converter there shouldn't be a problem. But I know on the X if you remove the catalytic converter for a hi-flow cat or test pipe a tune is MANDATORY. So you might want to double check whether it still has a cat or not.

Definitely!

He said its a full exhaust so I'm assuming a complete TBE. He also wasn't sure if it was catless or not so who knows. I suppose I will just have to check myself!

I guess it could also be just a catback since he didn't really know what a downpipe was

Should be fine without a tune with a full turboback. You might get a check engine light for the rear o2 and it'll most likely run rich.

I picked up my evo with pretty much same mods and drove for a month before I got it tuned.

Well, if you go check out the car, just look under it and if you can see the giant catalytic converter in the middle of the car, then it still has one. If not, then should probably think about a tune after buying it.

When I bought my evo from the dealer, the salesman was an idiot, kept telling me how to use things like backup camera, parking sensors, seat heaters, etc. But my car didn't even have those options lol. So I just nodded and smiled and tried to get him out of my new car.

I wouldn't skip over the car just because the guy doesn't know anything about it, just go there and look it over yourself to decide.
